The M1 Garand Build Thread

Made some homemade tools today.

Fired 16rnds in mine today, kneeling.

Got a 5in group at 50yards. Problem is that the thing shoot 8in too high.
Maybe the way I look at the sights is wrong, I don't know.

I've grinded some material from the end of the aperture rear sights to make it go in a bit deeper. I'll see how it goes next time I find time to fire it (benchrest time !).

They are beautiful! I am just now laying on some linseed on a stock I got from a buddy last year. Put about 6-7 coats on it last year but I am a little bored so I am going to add a few more. My buddy had bought a 53 IHC back in the 80's that came from a bunch that were brought in from Vietnam. It had come with the usual dents and nicks and the usual bullet tip marks on the right side from setting the enblocs which is kind of cool.

He then proceeded to fill the holes with wood filler and paint it black. :( He used it that way for years and then bought a Boyd replacement which was nice. A few months later I said where is that black piece of shgit you took off it and he told me it is going in the wood stove soon unless you want it. Of course I said sure I'll take it. After stripping it and sweating it and just loving it I kind of think it looks cool. I have a beautiful presentaion stock I paid mega bucks for for my IHC Garand but I kind of like this one best, dents and all.

Those Vietnam era ones are pretty cool at least to me as they tell a story that you can't find in a history book. I have another I stripped down as it had a crap load of ugly paint on it and found someone had carved in Minh Ho. Now why would anyone want to paint over that history? Lots of bullet tip set marks also, very cool and I wish it could talk to me.

Barrels ? If you are hoping to build that dream Garand with a Krieger, peterdobson, yes that's his CGN handle will have some barrels on hand right now for around $520 give or take.

Hirsch Precision in NS is a board sponsor and he is ordering more M1 barrels in both .308 and .30-06

Hope this helps.

BTW for you Southern Ontario Garand lovers , stay tuned for a Garand clinic in Burlington. Still cementing the bookings at. BRRC.

Cheers and keep helping the noobs here.

Could just have used the combination tool made for the rifle to do that.;)

Grizz

Wheelin' n' dealin' got me these. I am thinking one in tung oil and the other linseed oil and compare for future reference.

That looks like nice furniture!

A hundred years ago I got an old .32 Winchester lever gun and I sanded that puppy down to 800 grit. Then I cut linseed with paint thinner in a 50/50 ratio and put 50 coats on - you coat the wood, let it sit for 1/2 hour, wipe it dry... and then do it again 24 hours later. I ended up with a beater lever gun stocked with wood that looked like it belonged on a Strativarius! HAR HAR HAR! I suppose the next thing I would have had to do is get the metal looking as good as the wood - but I traded the gun away and have kicked myself for doing it ever since. I know the guy I traded it too and he won't sell it back to me and he is too big for me to beat up.

Will you sell me the gun once you get it built, FAL? ;)

I'm about to place an order from Numrich for all the parts I need to finish my build. Does anyone know for the $500 limit, is shipping included in that? I am at $480 before shipping, $530 after shipping, will it go through?

Isn't it a $1000 limit through Numrich now?

So here's my build cost so far (shipping, Tax & exchange rate included)

Receiver (SFRC) - $69
Barrel & Bolt SA NOS (ebay)- $380
Follower Rod (FirearmsCanada) $12
Rear sight (FirearmsCanada) - $40
Adjustable Gas Plug (ee) - $30

Brownells Order - Unfinished boyds stock set, Barrel Vise, Chamber reamer, Go/ no go's - $560

Numrich Order - $605
24" cresscent wrench from princess auto - $40

Only parts I'm missing are rear sight cover, op rod catch assembly and follower arm.

Grand total of $1736. I should be able to recoup a few bucks selling off the reamer & gauges.

Here is my progress:
I have one that is completed and reamed
the other is on the good way and reamed but I still need some parts and a complete stock.
The built cost for both now are around 2150$

Here are the tools that I made and used for the project

Love them improvised build tools!

For you M1 Garand builders, I've just emailed peterdobson (that's his CGN handle) of Hirsch Precision and he has some Krieger M1 Barrels in .30-06 in stock and they are NM quality running around $500 ish. Hey, this is very serious quality. Give him a PM or email from Hirsch Precision (sponsor banner up top). :D

Now for the rest of you Hwy 401 in Eastern Canada, I have a 2 day M14 Clinic in Trenton on 15-16 March. If you have a barrel to be installed on your M1 Garand receiver, I can do this for you:

* remove old barrel and install new or other .30-06 (government issue) on Saturday afternoon, easy peasy, lemon squeezy! :)
* remove old barrel and install new .308 barrel (you have one handy?) and finish ream to 1.630" headspace
* install barrel on your bare receiver

Any of these installs can be done for you at the M14 Clinic. If you don't want the clinic, but do want the installation performed, I can turn you around very quickly. It will cost you a bottle of JLohr Cabernet Sauvignon for this install.

So here we are on CGNutz sharing the M1 Garand love. I got yer backs!

Cheers,
Barney

Did you use just the one magnetic dial indicator tool to time the barrel? I am heading south to Harbor Freight this week and was going to get a couple.

If you can use 2 parallel steel rod, you will get a better result.
I began with the "protractor" but fast I threw it away and used steel rod to get a better result

Finally got my new in the wrap M-1 bolt from Greece! I gave up on it months ago.

I ordered the complete internals for it, looks like they'll end up in the spare parts bin for the time being.

It was interesting because the Canada Post tracking number was applied the 5th of November 2013... looks like it fell off the cart....

Got the last of my parts today and now shes all together, might try and match the colors of the wood now. Guess it's time to restore my sporterized 1903 now.
