1911 Modifications Thread:

I love my VZ grips.

I bought my grips from them via Amazon. The amazon store did not have the profile of grip I wanted( magwell cut). So I emailed them and they said they would just send the profile I wanted, and then sent me a conformation email. They were really helpfull. I will post pics when I get the grips.

Well finished up a little project gun I've been working on, picked up a GSG 1911 awhile back and while it worked flawless for me through the 1200 or so rounds of whatever ammo I put through it as it wasn't fussy at all, I still wanted to mess with it a bit with some aftermarket parts. Haven't had it to the range yet with the new bushing setup as I just added the last parts today.

Anyway, started with some water buffalo horn grips off FleaBay and machined them for the ambi safety, tweaked the sloppy factory safety so the left hand lever is now tight with no play. Installed a Dlask mainspring housing and one of their front fiber optic sights along with their rear adjustable. Went with a GSG Pro full length guild rod and spring kit, then added a CWA front barrel bushing and spring plug set that eliminates the screw in the side and makes it operate more like a regular 1911 centring the barrel with the bushing. Last thing was a full set of CWA magazine end extensions for all my mags as I wanted the bit of extra grip length they provide, plus they just look cool ;)

And that's about all I have planned for it, too bad they didn't come with a better finish from the factory, but oh well it's something I can live with for now till it looks too bad then maybe a strip down and bead blast.

Interesting. I have no experience with the GSG, are these parts you guys swap regular 1911 parts, or are they proprietary to the GSG? Just curious to know if they use the same tolerances/design as the "real thing".

My parts besides the main spring housing and grips are GSG specific, but I do know of lots of guys swapping regular triggers, safety's and such.

any 1911 parts will fit a GSG frame !
only diff is that you have to shave 0.005 thou from the alu GSG frame to get in the slide stop pin
the ONLY part that is not in Colt tolerances and cannot be changed is the mag release, have to stay with the short plastic GSG

If you are serious about working on your 1911 pick up a copy of George Nonte, Jr's book "Pistolsmithing", he has a chapter dedicated to "tuning" the 1911. Pick up a used copy on-line, well worth the investment.
