That looks fricken awesome and it ain't even dressed up yet! I'm goin out for honkers today, will report back this evenin.

I got 2 geese this morning!! I am so happy I have bagged my first Canada Geese! There were several dozen flying around for a few hours. There were also several hundred ducks out an about. I hope they stick around until the duck opener. I was using a Rem 870 with a 28" barrel with a modified choke. The ammo was 3" Remington "T" steel shot.

Good stuff man! The first ones are always the most excitin and proudest! Kudos for gettin done with T shot that's some sparse shootin! I was out openin mornin but no luck, wasn't at my good pond though but I ain't gonna shoot up my duck pond at dirty old honkers before duck opener... Got another spot to try yet, will report back Monday on that failure.

Im in on Waterfowl 2015. went out on pre season opener on the 6th. was hunting in a t shirt and short. was about 25c no wind. downed 5 birds of about an X of 60 birds. since then field has been flipped and no birds, so been scouting area and will probably hunt duck opener on 19th for geese and mallards!

equipment setup is
Remington Versamax waterfowl pro
Kent Silversteel 3.5" BB shells
about 60 Avian X Flocked goose decoys
and about 40 Avian X floaters of all types along with 6 field decoys!

no retreiver dog though :(

whats funny is that, on opener on the 6th. i had about give or take 60 birds. first was a loner who came. then two doubles about 15 min apart. didn't see the rest of the birds. so downed all birds that showed up! but what bothers me is that all these birds are still there just not on my field. but.... can't hunt the other ones.. so thats a disappointment. but I've been scouting and should have another hunt read to go on the weekend!

where abouts do you hunt? i hunt southern quebec and some parts of ontario
as for my gear! haha ya def not a bad setup :p

what gear are you using?

As posted in another thread, opening day for Canada's saw me bag 4 birds, with only 1 bird downed 2 days later. The birds were hunted over water with an 11 decoy spread (8 floaters, 3 feeders). Birds were called in to within 20 yards and a total of 6 shots were required to bag all 4 birds. One bird reminded me what "a wild goose chase" really means as it attempted a quick swim into unpassable swamp waters and required an additional 2 shots to end the retrieve. And as usual, Murphy's law also reminded me that regardless of how well tuned an outboard engine is, the only time it will ever stall out and flood is when a crippled bird is trying to make a quick getaway. Good times!

As for gear, Im shooting Federal and Winchester shells in various shot sizes. But the ones used on this hunt were Winchester 3 1/2" BB's and Federal 3 1/2" BBB's. The gun being used is a Mossberg 935 and the decoys are Redhead floaters and Higeon Feeders.

Holy moly, see that many honkers at one time where I am we call that a horde! I hunt down in swampy Southern Ontario so unless yer right exactly on the puddle they wanna land in yer takin yer chances. So many swamps, ponds and lakes down here makes it hard to hunt. If you want a field of any sorts ya gotta own it otherwise it's a case of " Who ya know or who ya blow " to use em. I don't know the right people and I sure ain't blowin nobody to use em haha.

My gear for geese is 4 flambeau floaters
Remington Versamax with carlsons black cloud mid range tube ( Use it for everything at any range )
Imperial 3" #1 steel and Remington sportsman 3" BB steel
Primos flute goose call
And finally my fold up tripod stool

Pretty simple, it works when the birds cooperate.

Nice birds man! But damn I don't know how you shoot them 3 1/2's they give me one awful headache! Head injury made guns I used to shoot with ease problematic now.

I added a limbsaver recoil pad and an extended ported choke on the Mossberg 935 and the 3.5" dont feel like they kick any harder then shooting 2 3/4" game loads out of a lighter fixed breach gun. In fact, there is not much difference in felt recoil then shooting 20g or 16g shells out of my Cooey single shot shotguns. Those Limbsaver recoil pads are magical!

got my first goose last week up in Georgian bay, nice 12 pounder sot with 2 3/4 #2 out of my moms 1100. My cousin was able to bag 4 ducks with my 870 on waterfowl heritage day when he was the only one allowed to shoot duck. Unfortunatly my goose fell into water above the chest waders and required a swim for the last 10 feet. Next time I bring the 16 month old lab to do the swim. My Dad did not want him going for geese as his first bird, despite the fact he has run down an eaten 2 babys

What kinda choke you usin? I had a limbsaver on my 870 slug gun I used to have it definitely tamed the gun alot for sure I agree!

I get nostalgic now and then and go out and plow some ducks with my old wingmaster 2 3/4" gun. Sucks a big one on the swim for the bird though I definitely know what that's like, except I do it trappin every year when I whack a beaver or otter out to far. Light a fire before you leave shore, strip down and dry out when you get back!

had extra clothes to change into, so wasn't too bad. My dog was super pissed at me for leaving him at home, he howled for 20 min after I left him behind. He can do the swim from now on.

Good thing you had the extra clothes. Best take the buck hound next time he might give ya the silent treatment if ya don't haha. My uncles beagle is like that, every time he see's us go out with the guns his tail get's goin so fast and he starts shakin so bad he almost falls over cause he thinks he's goin deer huntin... Poor guy's gonna be devastated next weekend when duck season opens and he can't go.

yup, I tried so hard not to wake my parents up on the way out, then the second I left he started howling at me in frustration until my mom was able to calm him down
