.22WMR for coyotes and timber wolves

I culled a lot of feral dogs with a 22 mag. It's deadly to 150M. Use hollow points, the FMJ's will just zip through. (Will run off and bleed out)

I have shot about 40+ coyotes with a 22mag with mixed results most die in a few feet yet I have had some take 5 hits in the vitals and die 100yards later. I shoot the Remington 33grn V-max and like Nine said out to 150yards they are deadly. I have no real explaination as to why some yotes can absorb 5 hits and not drop other than they are tough little buggers and the 22mag doesn't have a lot of Me to tip them over. So as to your question yes the 22mag works well inside 150yards.

I don't have any experience with, but I would imagine 22 magnum on a full grown wolf, sounds more like a stunt, than a regular practice.

Just my meager opinion. I once used a 222 on a young wolf, and this required two shots @60 yards.

I used a 30 grain CCI bullet on a coyote just last week, I'd say the range was 60m. Worked well enough though I think a wolf would be quite a stretch.

A 22 mag is much too light for wolves. I consider wolves harder to kill than deer, and maybe even black bear.
I know, you will now chime in with, "any animal hit in the lungs will soon die, etc, etc." Wild wolves in the bush are hard to shoot. Any shot you get will likely be aimed at the wolf, rather than at a vital spot. I have had to trail down wolves hit hard with each of a 270 and a 30-06. I also lost a wolf that I had knocked down with a 30-06. I think 100 grain bullets in a 243, or 6mm of some kind would be adequate, but I wouldn't want to go any lighter.

+1
.22 WMR, although a fine cartrudge, is not for wolf hunting. Not legal in many provinces/states fo the purpose either. Anybody who endorses it for wolf hunting likely hasn't shot any wolves to know the conditions the shots are usually presented and how large and tenacious(and dangerous) these animals are. Of course, a .22 WMR could kill a wolf (or a Cape Buffalo)

Not legal for wolves or yotes in BC.

I don't consider it a good wolf cartridge, either.

Might work with good shot placement at closer ranges, but ti's not ideal on a running wolf at unknown ranges.

How about a .270 Win? Would this be too much for yotes and wolves? I'm thinking of maybe getting a CZ 550 American in this chambering.

This chambering and 100 grain bullets, might be the 'cat's meow' as a bigger varmint rifle. If you do care about pelt destruction that is. As an example, a friend in Moose Jaw used this same combination, on local coyotes. He found it a little too destructive on prairie 'yotes(fur). But considering the wolf's size & toughness, it maybe perfect. With it's laser-like trajectory, good optics & explosive bullets, in a good rifle, it would be the ultimate wolf slayer if the shooter is up to the task.
In regards to my one-time harvest of a young wolf with a 222.....I would never be a personal choice again. A 22-250, under great conditions would be my minimum, and a 243/7-08/30-30 would be even better for this task, depending on terrain & conditions.

Timbers

+2 or however many on choice of a .270 to make clean kills on Timbers. Better to be slightly over gunned and maybe people forget how big Timber wolves actually are, even out here in the East.

I wanna kill a coyote with a Diana 350 Magnum (williams peep).177 cal , and Gamo Raptors:runaway: Velocity Mach plus.
Now before the lock:D, this would be under 30 meters...:D

Have a cz 452 22 mag topped with a menace 10x , and harris swivel prone pod. It like HP CCI maxi mag , and would be a go to for the land shark yote.

.22 WMR has it's place - does what a .22 can do with more range and authority. Kills coyote easily out to 150 yards, but as stated wolves are a different dog altogether. .243's perfect for both. Probably 99% of all wolves are shot with whatever's being packed while big game hunting but when we go after wolves specifically I pack the .243.

Ok, now you guys have my attention. What would you guys suggest as a coyote and wolf rifle? I have a .308 and 30 06 and I normally hunt in forestry but I'm hoping on some prairies 09.

Not legal for wolves or yotes in BC.

Actually Gate, Rimfires are Perfectly legal to use in BC on Yotes.

Also legal to use rimfires on Bobcat, linx, wolverine and all other small game which includes Coyotes:)

Definately not a good choice for wolves and yes Illegal for any "Big game" animal here.

I think .22 mag is a good pest control gun, it will kill any dog dead. Would I go hunting with it? no.
I hunt with a 22-250.
