25 Yard Freestyle Accuracy.....let's play a game.

Thanks, but with my Beretta's I don't use a 6 o'clock hold. I need to hold the dot of the front sight dead center on the target. It's difficult because the sights virtually cover the whole target.

I find that the first double action pull on the trigger leaves me wondering where the trigger will break on the next shot even though it is much closer.
More rounds down range could solve the problem.
I will be back with some targets.

Shot indoor tonight on the 15 meter 22 range. Smith and Wesson M&P 22 shot at 15 meters on a B-8 scaled down to 15 meters. Here's the best unsupported 2 handed target shot (98-4x) as well as the one rested target I shot to see what the gun could do. My other 2 handed targets were 80s / low 90s. This was the best by far. I also shot a bunch of targets 1 handed and was humbled. Every target seemed to have a few 6s or 7s no matter how hard i tried.

Historical Interest Only!

Okay Clob, I have finally gotten around to contributing something. These are of historical interest only as they were all shot during past years - when I was much better - and with one hand in formal bullseye competitions. Haven't shot with two hands since I gave up PPC over a decade ago.
First is my very first 100 point target, shot at the 1978 Montana State Championships in Missoula. Good time to do it!

The pistol is my Unique DES69 that I have had since 1976.

Second is actually a 25 Metre ISSF target shot in Centrefire at the 1990 Canadian National Pistol Championships in Edmonton. The pistol is a Single Action S&W Model 14. If you overlay the scaled 25metre version of the NRA target the score would read as 99 - 8X. I did have a 100 point CF NRA target but it and the Hammerli P240 are long gone.

The final target is a pair from the last time we were able to shoot an outdoor 2700 at the Steve Johnson Range in Calgary. Note that the lower target is Slowfire 50 yards, the upper is my last Rapidfire (10 second 5 shot strings). The gun is a Colt Gold Cup series 70 accurized by Lew Muller of Billings back in 1979, and the scope and trigger systems were redone by me.

Someday when I'm feeling better and can get to the range, I'll try two hands and see how it goes.

Cheers Dr Jim

Brutus, Brutus, the target and distance don't matter, you look at the front sight. Alignment is everything! If you are seeing the target, even at 10 metres, as other than a fuzzy blur, you are doing it wrong!

I am putting forth that a narrower front blade has to do something good at longer then normal engagement distances. Of course alignment has to be bang on.

For example replacing the issue front sight on many Garand rifles to a thinner match front blade, often results in better shooting results on smaller targets.

In theory this should also convert over to handgun shooting as well. Some European Free Pistols were made so that you could replace the front sight and modify the rear sight notch too.

Cheers.....

Yup, TOZ35s came with five rear blades and five widths of front sight. The rears were all different widths of slot, and had square notches on one side and U notches on the other. We tried every combination possible that let you have "white" bars visible, and even made up VERY skinny fronts. In the end it came down to personal preferences and visual acuity. Eventually we all tended to return to a front that was perceived to be similar size to the bull, and a rear blade that gave clear and distinct whites that were easy to judge as equal. Funny thing that we noticed was that they seemed to be just about the same as on a S&W K-38 or a Bowmar target rib. I did once shoot silhouette-the reduced version for 22 (40 to 200 yards) and as long as you could judge the vertical adjustment needed, irons worked fine.

Thank you for sharing sir.

T&G, you certainly have a mitten full of experiences.

Have a good one!

I am convinced I should be able to shoot a 100 with a 22. used to do it all the time - 1 handed.

I tried my revolver today, although I think my Ruger pistol gets better results.

When Can-Am had that Norc 1911 deal with a case of ammo going, I was buying the pistols for $250 on EE. They all got new grips, new sights and a trigger job. They shoot fairly well. Each one has a "target load' and a "hot load" noted. Today I shot a hot load. 225 gr FP (lead) over 5.8 gr Universal Clays.

I love the over all grime on the 3919, and also the punchmarks on the rear sight. Firearms are meant to be used and adjusted to your spec and that one is a perfect example. Love it.

Wow, your pistol collection is very impressive. I'm drooling over your S&W 3919.

Those groups are actually very good considering the variety of pistols you shoot. I'm sure is you standardized on one of those pistols for a few weeks group size and POI would improve dramatically. Great shooting.

I haven't been shooting it much since I got my M&P, but I had my CZ 75B out last week to shoot a couple groups. The first one was with Hornady 124 grain XTPs over 4.5 grains Universal:

A nice group, but a little to the right, so not quite as good a score as it should have been.

Next is 147 grain Campros over 3.5 grains Titegroup:

I wish I had not blown that one shot in the 7 ring! I don't think I have ever had 5 Xs in a 10-shot string with a centrefire pistol before.
