.308, 00 buck, or slug for grizzly?!

Forgive my noobish question, but I will be hiking this year in Ontario and I may only have my .303 British..

How will this hold up?

Once again, noob here..

I thought you guys might like this excerpt from an excellent book on this subject called "Backcountry Bear Basics" by Dave Smith:

"In order to qualify to carry a gun afield in Alaska, U.S. Forest Service employees using a .375 H&H Magnum must put nine shots (three sets of three) in a 12-inch circle at a range of 15 to 40 yards in 10 seconds or less."

10 seconds is a looooong time to shoot a 3 shot group at 15 -40 yards.

When I first started bow hunting in the Flathead River Valley in South East BC 30 years ago I packed a 303 British for my backup rifle and this is grizzly country...

You do your part and the 303 will be more than enough for anything you encounter and will get the job done for you...

Smoothbore shotgun - plug pulled for capacity under the tube - loaded so first pump stuffs slug out - next pumps insert buckshot to offending bear if it's still coming.

Bear are the most over-estimated at how thick/tough they are of all game animals IMO. They're a bush pig - soft ribs with a big bag of guts inside. In spring their heart rates are low so they die slower....once they're up and moving (when one would be fast enough to be a threat) - they die fast when hit with pretty much anything harder hitting then a baseball. Heck any I've shot with arrows haven't made it more then ten yards. NOW if one was mad - give me shotgun over arrow...I hunt bear from treestand with shotgun at my side.

There is a guy at my work who is an awesome hunter. I am more of a wanna-be. Anyway, he has been charged by a grizzly bear many, many times. His .300 wssm has always worked well. The .308 at close range would probably do the same.

Cheers, thanks :D

If I wanted to re-load my 12g for bear defence, what would be better, AA's or a stack of dimes? :D

I'm a fan of the 45/70. It pack enough punch and I can work it fast enough that the gun'll be empty in less than 30secs and all rounds in a pie plate at 20 yards. If it still wants to eat me after, it can go ahead.

It's three, 3-shot groups or 9 shots of .375 H&H in under 10 seconds.

Actually your wrong...

What that statement says is that they had to do three 3 shot groups and each one of those 3 shot groups had to be shot in under 10 seconds...

If I'm wrong and you're right I'm extremely curious as to what rifle they were using that holds 9 rounds of 375 H&H mag ammo or do you figure they had to reload in that 10 seconds as well? :D

I call bull sh*t... :D

Please let us know what kind of rifle they are using because I am unaware of any rifle that is chambered in 375 H&H that takes a stripper clip.

I still call bull sh*t... :p

As far as the OP's original question..... An unplugged (legal 'cause you're not hunting) pump shotgun with a rifled barrel shooting a good slug (Winchester Supreme 385 gr partition) packs a s**t load of energy at close range. I'd personally take that over most any rifle for bear defense......

My god, this is the longest bear defence thread I have ever seen!

I think most of us stand a better chance of being struck by lighting standing in our bathtubs than ever having to put down a trouble bear in the bush.

Having said that I too like to be prepared for the worst so.....

Use enough gun, be competent with what you use and be SMART in the bush (most problems with bears can usually be avoided!)

Shooting a 350gr in a 9.5 - 10 lbs 375H&H at what tops 2200fps - 2250fps isn't that much of a load...

I shoot 350gr @ 2150fps out of my far lighter 8 lbs 18.5" Marlin 1895GS 45-70...

How even if you reduce the recoil a bit for a lighter bullet does he shoot 9 rounds in 10 seconds and still hit the target...

Sorry bud but your just telling me that you don't know what your talking about...
