.308, 00 buck, or slug for grizzly?!

I saw it as 3 loaded... shoot 3... load 3... shoot 3... load the last 3... shoot the last 3...

Ok I withdraw my comments I won't remove them but I now see it for what it is...

FYI I have 100 .375" cal 350gr Barnes TSX to test out coming from Todd Bartell @ Omineca Sports in Vanderhoof I will be loading them in my 21" barreled 375RUM that I have modified by shortening the barrel and installing sights velocities will be appr 200fps faster than your buddies loads in the video you posted and I will shooting them in a lighter 8.8lbs rifle.

I will be using these for my bear defense loads when I am working solo this year in remote wilderness areas of Northern BC & possibly NWT/Yukon...

I'm thinking when I get these loads together it is time to do a few video's with this rifle... :)

I agree that it's BS. It was a quote from a book so please don't shoot the messenger :).

Doesn't matter if it doesn't make any sense, the person who wrote that crap must have believed it why else would he have wrote it. Surprised the senior publisher didn't scrutinize it better ask himself and more experienced colleagues if it was remotely logical to begin with.

Wonder how people actually bought that BS? why they've chosen to intentionally misled so many by publishing crap like this is beyond me

Wish they'd stop wasting so many peoples time with this (non)sense garbage

My god, this is the longest bear defence thread I have ever seen!

I think most of us stand a better chance of being struck by lighting standing in our bathtubs than ever having to put down a trouble bear in the bush.

Having said that I too like to be prepared for the worst so.....

Use enough gun, be competent with what you use and be SMART in the bush (most problems with bears can usually be avoided!)
I won't dispute that, but it's always that 1% that gets you. I hesitate to type this, as already I hear the snorts of derision and epithets loudly proclaiming disbelief, but my best friend's uncle was mauled 5 times I believe. I think he was actually bear hunting twice out of those incidents. And no, I wasn't there but his family sure believes it and I have no cause to doubt it as he even went to the trouble of typing a memoir of the incidents. And again I'm not a chemist or biologist, but apparently it was the way his pheromones interacted with a certain aftershave which produced the unexpected (I'm sure) results. His name is Ray (if I remember right) Halliday and I believe it was around the Quesnel area of B.C. Maybe someone has heard of him or this and can substantiate? Since we're all here, anyone got any good close call stories?.....Camp Cook?

Blackies often check me out, I dont know if I am so lucky or what. Pretty much every time there is juvenile nearby the darn thing will come to the sound from sheer curiosity. 90% of the time it will bolt, but before it does the thing will be running towards me, without seeing, just running toward some new interesting sound. Good thing about black bear is its size, I am confident having either my M14s or old trusty 20g with slugs. I really don^t know how would I feel if there were more of grizzlies in the area, would probably be paraniod and have something more of 45-70 at very least. He sais be smart... hmmm... can be avoided... competent:confused: smart ass. Been ever in the dark, surrounded by a few bears so you had to count your ammo - its like war, you shoot one and another one is coming, all within 100 yards or so. Sure enough it could be avoided... by staying home altogether.

I stand by what I said. In terms of being smart in the bush I mean things like not leaving out garbage, you know, simple ass things like that.

Competent in the use of whatever you choose to defend yourself with. Smart ASS? thats ok, I've been called worse by better :)

Mad Grizzly Protection

Neo's grizzly guide had it right - big, long, heavy rifle slug is the best medicine.

Of the 3 options, 308W best with 200 grain Nosler patitions sighted in for 50 yards.

Two of my hunting buddies were charged by a big sow grizzly and her two 2 1/2 year old cubs that wanted to eat them. After his first shot, one of them jammed his gun and was out of commission. Grizzly charged vey fast, the sow finally dropped with a shot from the hip at 8 yards away - they were both using 30-378 with heavier bullets.

Buckshot works fine for protection from black bears.

My buddy has been charged by grizzlies many times. Some of the times he was grizzly hunting. Some of the time he got very close to the Grizzlies with a movie camera. The last time was in 2009. I gotta see the movie his girlfriend took of the charge. It's only a couple seconds long apparently. The .300 wsm worked.
