6.5 Creedmoor?

6.5 Fanboy chiming in here….I’ve been a 308 / 7.62mm geek since I was a 16 year old Westie shooting an FNC1A1 and I began my 6.5 journey with the .260 back in 2011. Absolutely hooked on the reduced wind corrections out to 1000 yards, but I had to try the 6.5 CM joy at 1000 yards and this is what I learned…..

.260 brass is easily made from 7mm-08 and .243 and .308 brass
I’m too cheap to spring for .260 Lapua brass in my old age
Love rebarreling (switch style) among this Family using the .308 headspace gauges ( 260 to 243 to 308 and back again)
6.5 CM brass is every where, new or once fired
6.5 CM brass by Starline / Peterson can be found in SRP format, thus freeing you from LRP shortage issues
.260 is a great cartridge especially IF you’re a hand loader (Life is Good!!) otherwise factory ammo is scarce
Don’t even try looking for .260 match loads at Cambodian Tire or BassPro or any LGS
Factory .260 hunting loads are nowhere near as plentiful as 6.5 CM choices/ availability/ boooolit selection
Selection of prefit barrels in 6.5 CM is rising and super available. Trying ordering a .260 prefit….

Buy / select what works for you and your game, hunt, budget, reloading expertise or lack of, ammo availability, cool factor, ego, rifle selection, range practice location, and finally ensure yer #### don’t fall off! It’s been a decade from the M14 clinics since I said that!
LOL

And finally; bullet placement! Get trained and attend every competition you can, it’s called; game pressure!

Peace Be The Journey!

Barney!

I shoot a .260 and it is very easy to load for, as others have said H4350 is your friend 41.3 grns. works for me. Not trying to stir the pot but this is my deer gun and it kills them dead. I know shot placement kills but there are a lot of variables at play in hunting situations that are not at the range. For the time when things are off a bit I want more oomph. I use a 35 whelen for moose and elk. In forty years of hunting I've seen it happen. I'm glad you guys have been successful with the 6.5 on bigger game and I hope you keep having success. It's just not for me.

I've used a 7-08 for 39 yrs or so now, have 2 of those, killed everything I ever wanted to whack with it. Looked at a 6.5CM as a range gun, after using it, I decided to buy another one to use for hunting as well. Haven't taken the one out hunting yet, but, I have zero question if it'll do what needs doing. Between the two cartridges I shud pretty much always be able to come up with a bullet or powder to do what needs doing, as there is so much bullet choice for either one, and both use same powders anyway. Just use a proper bullet for the task at hand, don't cheap out on that point, it pays off in the confidence level on a range or in the field, when you know it will absolutely do what's asked of it.

A Little Example ! JUST think and remember this 👍 a 140 gr bullet shot at a speed of SAY 2800 fps will kill the same no matter what cartridge it is shot from ! So a 260 Rem or 6.5 CM or 6.5x55 Swede all KILL exactly the Same ! So to say one is better then the other is Pure BS . JMO RJ

Haven't you heard, Jim? Put a headstamp on it that people don't like and suddenly 140gr bullets that open up to wider than .500" don't kill anymore. Worst ever.

I hate the .30-30 purely because of how it looks, at least I’m being honest. However, that doesn’t change the fact that it has probably taken more game than most other calibers out there. People should be honest about why they criticize certain calibers. When you mix ego, lies, and hypocrisy, it leads to the kind of dumb statements we’ve seen in this thread.

Kills deer at spitting distance too. I Was standing at a fence corner watching this buck bedded with a hot doe a couple hundred yards away. A pair of feral sheep dogs chased it right to me. Shot it from the hip as it ran by a few feet away. It cart wheeled to a stop busting off a tine in the process. 140gr A-MAX again. Works equally well on dogs.IMG_5475.png

Weatherby would like to have a word..."Nothing shoots flatter, hits harder, or is more accurate" ;)

Being that the Creedmoor was designed to.improve 140 grain bullet performance in shorter action rifles over the 260 Remington for the National Course matches Stateside, it only held a bit of interest for me. Although I did barrel up one of my match rifles for it and had some great fun with it.
However as a hunting cartridge, it is a fine one with lots of factory rifle and ammo offerings with a bit more punch over my 6.5x54 Mannlicher Schoenauer.
However, I am not about to buy one as I have no need .

Moose aren’t immune to the Creed either. Kimber Hunter, 130gr TSX to the back of the head . About 100 yds running straight away. Another spectator summersault.
Meh.. Most animals head shot at that range with typical BG Cals will topple over.. being a 6.5Cm doesn’t make it anymore noteworthy or special.

Always kind of think along these lines whenever someone says (or posts) "dropped right where it stood". Especially if its in endorsing one cartridge over another.

Okay, cool...but where'd ya hit it?

Although, can add a caveat that most people are going to shoot the milder end better. Most. Whether or not that applies is up to everyone haha

Exactly!

Had that Moose (above) been shot at that range with say.. a 243, 25-06 or whatever it still would've dropped. Head shots kinda have that effect.

The outcome would have been the same if all I had that day was a 223 and 55grTTSX.
The Op asked about killing with a 6.5 Creed.
Feel free to “hang” a pic of something you have killed with one. I’ll wait.🥱

Do I like the creedmoor? No. And only cause it turns guys who can barely hit the broad side of a barn into "SWAT Snipers" overnight. But it is stupid accurate, low recoil and easy to load for. Theres a reason the majority of guys run it in PRS or NRL Hunter. Truthfully I would consider buying another one though and i'd run like a 127gr Barnes LRX for hunting.

I had an RPR 6.5 creed for PRS when I first started. I ran 140 Berger VLD Target with H4350 (I wanna say 43.5ish grains). It was stupid easy to load for and very accurate HOWEVER I knew the VLD's were sensitive to seating depth but I didn't realize how sensitive they were. I was tweaking my load the one day and I had a little wiggle room to go longer in my mag, but that current load/depth combo shot 0.5 MOA 5 shot groups at 100 very consistently but I wanted to see if it could do better. So I loaded up 3 loads, 5 shots each (15 total), with each load being 0.005" longer than the last. Then did the same going shorter. Long story short, my base to o-give measurement on the 0.5 MOA load was 2.115" and with me going to 2.120" and 2.125" it stayed the same, but then outta the blue, 2.130" shot literally 1 hole, 5 shots. And it did it multiple times after that days down the road.

So I learnt a valuable lesson, I used to play with seating depth 0.010" difference at a time, and had I done that, I would have missed the "sweet spot" even though every load I tried was under MOA, this was impressive. Ive never had a factory rifle shoot 5 shots into 1 hole before. My buddy was with me and he couldn't even believe it, just watched the group go from good to incredible.

I never did hunt with it though. Would I have? Absolutely, i'd rather hunt with a guy who knows how to put a bullet where it counts with a 6.5 Creed than someone who shoots a 300 win mag and hits animals in the ass every time.

And you’ve just reiterated my point with your first and third lines.. 🙄

You’ll be waiting a long time, so pull up a chair, grab a drink and smoke ‘em if you got ‘em cause I don’t have nor will have a 6.5CM.

That's pretty cool

If you still had the rifle I'd be super interested in seeing what 2.115 and 2.130 CBTO would group 30 shots each like on paper, allowing barrel to cool every 5 shots
