I picked up some of that 6.5 Rem Mag brass sitting in the EE. Thinking of converting over a Model 700 SA in 300 wsm to one. With an extended mag box at 2.98". Maybe it's better in a long action... Not sure. Possibly a medium like a M70SA or Kimber to 3" is a better candidate for a hunting gun.
Anyone have or build one? Looks like a nice cartridge running just above a 6.5/284.

So Bucky after ALL this discussion are you gonna build a 6.5 RMAG ? :d RJ

6.5RM is about the best rounded higher velocity 6.5 available. I've never experienced anything negative about a "belted" cartridge either. There are faster but at the expense of barrel life. 6.5RM is the sweet spot.

Hard to say an obsolete cartridge is the best

Hard to say an obsolete cartridge is the best

There are reasons for various cartridges being "obsolete," that have nothing to do with the cartridge itself... I had a couple Rem 600 series rifles in 6.5 RM and can fully understand why they became obsolete.

Sure, but the cartridge is hardly 'available' , nobody makes ammo or brass for it, let alone rifles

That is the one nice thing about these new cartridges, 6.5CM, 6.5PRC Hornady has done a great job with supporting the cartridges with readily available reasonably priced good quality ammo, (and components) so it’s hard not to like them or make use of that situation, even makes more sense if a chap is not a hand loader, when you can grab a box of factory ammo and shoot 1/2” groups with a good hunting bullet, all in all were very fortunate nowadays in the shooting/hunting world.

If you shoot 20 rounds a year out of a rifle no biggie. But if you actually shoot stuff give your head a shake. Seriously.

Do you buy your brass in singles, Chuck?

I would bet that I shoot more rounds a year than you do... likely by far... 300 CF rounds this morning, from six rifles, and that twice a week most of the year. I have 500 6.5 Rem Mag brass, I have 6.5 Rem Mag dies, I have a couple K 6.5 bullets, I have two M77-R MKII SS .350 Rem Mags, one of which is just dying to become a 6.5 RM... how does that not make sense?

You don’t shoot more than me, no.

Find me 500 rounds of 6.5 RM brass.
