I have a No4 MKI* Longbranch 1943.The top of bolt handle is stamped 1763 with the big star.CA 7.62 stamp near muzzle.
This has no charger bridge.Did they make some without it?
Action apears original with nice parkerizing.
Will post pic tomorrow.

The only place the 1763 is marked is on the bolt handle top.Nothing on the reciever ring.Serial # on butt socket does not match bolt but both start 35L.There is also E 2 0 stamped on the left buttsocket near the bottom.

The E20 will be either an inspectors mark or a work order mark for receivers that went back through Canadian Arsenals for either rebuild or refinishing. I see the same format of stamps on stens (brit or cdn made) out of Cdn service, when refinished to that gray colour.

Has anyone seen a No4 rifle that has no charger bridge?

I have one that is almost identical to yours.

It looks like it was fitted with a PH rear sight as well at one time but the front sight protectors are missing.

It started life as a Savage. It looks like the DCRA numbers were ground off the receiver.

The receiver is D&Ted for a side mount scope, not a military scope though.

It also came with a proper LB sniper cheek piece and of course is in 7.62x51.

The rifle is in the 54C###X range and is marked with flaming bomb stamps as well as electropenciled 308.

Someone made a rough but serviceable modification to the mag to have it accept 7.62x51 rounds in a single stack and the stock is in VG+ condition. The rifle has also been glass bedded.

It's very accurate in the right hands, with the scope mounted on it.

If you want some pics, send me your email in a PM and I will send some your way.

I heard, there was a tech on the Chilliwack base that was doing the work. Rumor only but supposedly he did several.

Mine doesn't look like a CA conversion although it may have started life as one.

The bolt on mine, matches the receiver number.

I just noticed, there isn't a front sight at all but there are bayo lugs and the muzzle end is marked 7.62 with a CA stamp.

Now, I'm wondering if CA didn't make up a batch of rifles with the charger bridge milled off????

Thanks for getting me to look at the rifle again. I haven't looked closely at it for at least a year.

Wheaty, if you are following this thread, could you maybe shed some light on these rifles????

Just had Canada Post drop off DCRA # 488 from the Wayne Mitchell estate sale Its a 1950 C No4 Mk1* in 7.62 with .303 magazine and a neat John Wilkes Precision rear sight and tunnel style front sight. Also another rifle in 7.62 with the Ca barrel but no DCRA number its also a LB No 4 Mk1* 1945 (included just for bragging rights)

So now that we have a pretty good list of DCRA numbers, can anyone fill us in on how these rifles may have been outfitted on the range? Was there a favorite sling? On all the rifles I own in the DCRA collection only one had a sling and that was the latest one. How about any other gear to complete the target rifle collection? thanks all.

I just got another Long Branch 1944.The DCRA # 1014 is only on the top of the bolt handle. The ser.# on the back side of bolt handle matches the butt socket#.
My other LB in the above post has #1763 only on top of the bolt handle.
Both rifles have no stamp on top of rec.
Did all DCRA rifles have stamps in both places?

I have seen at least one that was stamped below woodline on receiver. Of the ones I've owned, one was just barely visible. I believe it was standard proceedure to stamp the DCRA number and symbol on both the receiver and handle. Have you had yours out of the stock yet to inspect? Not to many years ago I remember seeing new in wrap DCRA marked bolts and even two bare .303 British barreled action still in the wrap.
Cheers
Geoff

DCRA did at least 3 conversions. First was installation of a 6 groove right hand twist 303 which did not have any conversion numbers. The barrels are all marked with their symbol. Second....You could also purchase barrelled actions in 303 and these were in "Ordance" wrappers. Generally all were 1949 or 50 CNo4 MK1* with 5 groove left hand twist barrels. I've seen 3 of these (1950) for sale in the last couple years....2 on EE.

Third....The 7.62 conversions were marked in 3 locations....top of bolt....left side of the receiver and barrel knox. Markings are lightly struck in some cases. Conversion number always matched the order tag....only seen a couple of these tags.

Just a numbered bolt would indicate to me that the rifle was assembled by somebody other than DCRA program.

Been told that DCRA did some heavy barrel conversions...any info out there?
