I'm thinking that if the 285 hornady is such a poorly constructed bullet and should be limited to use on deer only ........ why would a person do this ?
meaning ,look at how much money a person would have to spend on hornady's product , then look at how much a decent gas checked hardcast bullet costs ........ and the cast bullet seems to out preform the hornady in every aspect .
if the bullet was some super slippery bullet with a very high ballistic co efficient , I could see the reasoning to use it on deer only .
but it is not .

I suppose if all you ever shot were deer then you could use the Hornady and never have a care in the world, in the same vein that if all you ever do is drive from the house to the office to the grocery store that a Smart Car would be just fine. Sure, there are lots of jobs that either would absolutely stink at, but for the basics they're both fine. Then again, some people do that exact commute with a F350 with a 10" lift and shoot deer with 45-70s and 416s. Doesn't make either one right or wrong, you just have to know your limitations.

So for the deer hunters in BC ad the Easter Slope of Alberta, find another bullet. But for everyone else...lung shoot to your little heart's content.

1 egg.......1 cup beer.......1 cup flour............1 1/8 tsp baking powder......2 tsp salt + 1 tsp garlic salt { fish fillets} Mix all ingredients.....wash /pat dry fillets with paper towel.Heat cooking oil in pot or pan.Dip fish in batter ...make sure it's not to thick or thin.Allow to brown.....Enjoy

For deer and black bear, I would agree. A friend has told me he will never use it on elk, and I know of two moose kills where the bullet only made it into one lung after hitting a rib on the way in. Yes, they died, but it was a long tramp before the moose were found and finished off.
The really sad part about all this is that other plain cup and core bullets seem to work fine, as did this 270 gr Speer, ......
...which also started of by smashing those big ribs before reaching the lungs.
Or these Norma Plastic Points, which are also cup and core, not bonded bullets, that were all recovered from moose and bears.
All Hornady would have to do is beef up the bullet a bit. This has been the case with a lot of the Interlocks since they changed the design. That is another thread, of course, and has been thoroughly discussed here a few years ago.

When the spawn hits here in AB they close the burbot season as they are too easy to catch and over harvesting was a problem.Funny cause in the 80's people threw them on the ice to rot. The spawning orgies of 50 + fish rolling in a ball is something to see with all the whitefish up top eating the roe.Catching 75 or more ling in a morning was common most in the 3-8lb range.......Harold

just to let you know that i didnt have any misfires this sunday. shooting resized brass.
so the answer was about Hornady brass not in the right sizing coming from the factory.
it is fixed and so the test can continue.

Perfect headspace, consequently no misfires with twenty resized brass. To be specific, all the brass was necked up to 40 cal, and then resized back down to 9.3X62 until the bolt just barely closed with a crush fit on the brass.
There was definitely an issue with the Hornady brass Phil bought. At first I thought it might be with the primers. Perhaps not being seated properly, or maybe a defective lot, but when the same problem occurred with the Remington factory stuff, it had to be the brass.
We did the resizing without depriming the cases. Pulled the bullets, dumped the powder, necked up to 40, then spun the decapping assembly up in the sizing die to leave the primers intact when resizing. Measured the powder back into the cases, seated bullets, and presto, all problems solved!
Anyway, more test results and pictures to come.

so with all the extra work , a guy might have been farther ahead just to use once fired 30-06 brass maybe ?
if i knew ahead. but for the test the local brass price was not that bad. lesson learnt: for brass and bullets there is a brand i will avoid in the future ....
