VLD's and magazines

Anyone want to comment on the use of the bullets we are talking about here and the use in a magazine. Are we able to use a magazine here or is all this single shot?

I have a Tic Tac I was thinking about starting this type of adventure with but was curious if magazine length was going to be a limiting factor.

It's possible to modify the Tikka mags for longer OAL. I mag feed 80gr Amax at a COAL of 2.410" in my T3 Varmint.

Can be done but not ideal. If you want to mag feed, the 80's are a better choice.

I am going to play with the 77gr SMK for the mag fed .223.

90 gr Bergers for the single shot.

Guess i need to try out some for the new Hornady Powder.

Thanks for the updates Jerry

Hi

While waiting for components and tools needed to shoot 90 vld I did some test with Berger 90 bt on Saturday.

I took the worst load from the last test which was 24.0 gr of Varget bullet touching the lands and did some experiment with seating depth.

I loaded 6 groups with 24 gr of varget - all with different seating depth.
These are the groups:
1) touching lands
2) 0.010 in to the lands
3) jump 0.010
4) jump 0.020
5) jump 0.030
6) jump 0.005

All groups were shot using Ladder system ( one shot from each group, then 2 min break)

Group #5 (jump 0.030) was about the same when I was using 24.3 of Varger and bullet was on the lands.

For this test I was using unsorted Winchester brass.

I think with properly prepared Lapua brass I can get better than 0.200 with this bullet.

got a chance to stretch out the legs at 500m in some gusty winds. Watching mirage or terrain signs and 1 flag at the target.

best groups were 1 1/2" for 4rds but mostly in the 2" range when I could get the wind call right. Otherwise, zingo, off it goes.

No camera for one day so was shooting blind and just holding center. Definitely can hold the 5 ring.

Went out today with my camera and could start to learn how to drive this bullet. V bull accuracy is definitely in the cards if you can get the wind right. Shot a nice 1" cluster when the winds held pretty steady for the shots.

It sure drifts more then my 6.5 ( no surprise here) but it is driveable.

Vertical was also very nice holding around 1" when I got the winds right. That is about all I can ask in any F class rig.

Look forward to warmer weather to finalize my load testing and also some more Chronie numbers. The drop I used suggested speed might be faster then the 2875fps I got last time in the very cold temps.

I am really going to enjoy shooting this set up...

Good work on the groups! Beautiful Stock on the rifle !!

I have had good luck with 25.8gr Varget in my Savage LRPV.

The weather is warming up finally and I have had a chance to do some 500m testing. Shooting very nicely with V bull accuracy and moderate vertical. Hard to say for sure how much vertical is load induced as it has always been windy.

Also, starting to monitor the effects of fouling. Leverolution burns leaving a black soot - very much like other ball powders of the past.

Shooting 40 to 50rds hasn't been a problem but I want to see if more frequent cleaning matters and what happen with many more rds fired.

With the temp range, the loads have stayed pretty similar so this powder is showing promise as being temp stable. But I still need temps in a high teens/20's to know for sure.

I am really enjoying the lack of recoil and spotting my own impacts. Lots more practising and testing to do.

Jerry

Thanks Westside.
25.8 gr of Varget, which bullet did you use? (90 vld or 90 bt)
Alex

that load is for the 77 gr SMK.

I will be trying out the 90 gr Bergers once the rifle is back in my hands.

Until then i will have to be satisfied with shooting my .338.

Just came back from the range. Today I was testing Berger 90 vld. I was testing 8 loads 23.8 24.0 24.2 24.4 24.6 24.8 25.0 and 25.2.

The best group at 100 meters was 25.2 of Varget 0.310, second best 0.380 24.4. Couldn't make a picture since it was raining all day and my target was destroyed by the end of the day.

Next week I am going to fine-tune 25.2 and 24.4.

By the way, based on advice from guys from Robertson Composites - I got new scale (Sartorius vic 123), pricey but worth every penny.

I did some more testing today with 90 vld. First I tried low charges 23.9 23.8 23.7. 23.6 23.5 23.4 of Varget. Results were terrible (1 to 5in), I could do better with my SKS.

Then I tried my best load from last shooting 25.1. 25.2. 25.3 of Varget. We did chronograph it 25.1 = 2845 25.3 = 2865 ( you can see pic below, 100 yards)

Nice shooting Alex, you will be set to go at Connaught shoot on May long weekend, those 90gr VLDs will work great at 900m the .308s will be paying attention to your new rig
