a few cats from this guiding season

Not all cats are scared of us, it really depends on how well fed the are. I had a great dog killed last month by a cougar, training the dogs, that same cat wore my boot to the side of her head as she rag dolled the little walker dog.

The cat in the tree with the dogs tore up 4 out the five dogs I had on the hunt. The hunter took the cat from about 2 yards with his bow. Talk about getting western.

The tan dog in the middle is 1/2 black and tan and 1/2 mutt, and man does she get it done, it was her littermate that got killed.

Thanks for all the nice comments. Doug

I think we should have a new rule where you should have to apply for Hunting access just like Off Topics access. That way when AZZhats start criticizing other's hunting methods (dogs, baiting, crossbows) we can ban them from Hunting but they still have access to the rest of CGN and the EE so they can still buy knitting needles and such from the EE.

Thanks for sharing the pics, they are pretty cool.

man that is my dream hunt . i love hunting with dogs and the cat would be the top game animal on my list love the pics DUTCH

Congrats on the fine cats... great photos.

Hunting with dogs can be the hardest of hunts, whether chasing cats, bears, or coons.. running behind pointers and looking for upland birds and rabbits is a lot of fun and also a great work out as well.

Anyone whose done it would never slam the idea of hunting with dogs, Its the greatest fast paced hunt of them all.:)

Sorry to hear about the loss of your hound. That's the hardest part about hound hunting. Cats, bears and wolves can do some serious damage if they decide to fight.

How many cats did your dogs tree/bay vs tracks started this season? Are you allowed to take lynx? Are you permitted to train your hounds year round on cats?

My dogs have caught all but one of the cats we started. We may have finished that track as well but the cougar left my guide area. We can harvest 1 lynx a year. Cougar season runs Sept-end of April.

Thanks for sharing your pics. Running coyotes with dogs gets the blood pumping, those big cats must be a rush. I am trying to imagine the sounds they must make at the dogs.

You guys should read Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter by Teddy Roosevelt. I am just finishing up reading it and the cougar hunting with hounds is easily the best part of the book so far. I highly recommend it!

Hey Doug, I read your story and seen these great pics on that other site.
Was sorry to hear how you lost one of your dogs, but able to get some retribution for her.
Thanks for sharing your pictures of the action shots !
Your initials wouldn't be DES would they?

No my name is Doug McMann the D.E.S you ask about should star in One Flew Over The Coocoo's nest.

Except it often involves hours of chasing dogs up and down hills, through deep snow, and over dead falls to get to that barrel. There are probably a lot of so called "hunters" on this site that don't work as hard to get their deer or moose, as some people work to get their cat.

And the people that usually complain the most about hunting with dogs, seem to be the non hunters. Perhaps those people should just shoot zombies on the computer and play with their tacticool crap, and avoid the hunting forum.

Thanks for posting these pics I enjoyed them very much!

Thanks for sharing those awesome pictures with us and being a lover of working dogs, am sorry to hear of the loss of one of yours.
I do have a question for you..... drawing from your vast experience with Cougar in the terrain that you hunt in, what would your choice/ choices be for ideal Cougar rifles and loads ?
I'm certain your opinion will be of interest to all of us..... and again Thanks.

You guys make sure they are really dead before picking them up right? Some of those cats are huge.
