ACR Media and Info Thread

Best loads thru my Questar barrel have been Factory xm193f. Followed by Norc 96 Gonna do some more testing n shooting once I'm done this wreched nightshift.

I'm on nightshift as well, in the middle of shutdown at the plant so I won't have a range day for a while. Can't wait to get back onto normal schedule and get to the range.

ntm, Is that one of the ATRS mags in your picture?

Which Plant? I'm at Suncor Edmonton right now

Scotford expansion. I've been an operator for Shell since 2009. Doing this boring crap since the late 90's though.
Wish there was something I could do in the firearms industry that could support my firearms and motorcycle addiction ;)

And now for some handloads.
Nothing spectacular but I have lots more to test using different bullets and powders. I'll find something good :)
Federal brass, Varget powder, Hornady 68gr BTHP, CCI 400 small rifle primers, COL is whatever my Hornady manual said it should be.

One inch squares, 5 shot groups shot at 100yds from the bench and bags.

Shot spacing was as soon as I had a steady hold on the target again, some groups followed the last as soon as I had put 5 more in the mag and got settled behind the rifle. Barrel was pretty warm for a few of them. Not an excuse for some of the groups, that's just how I test my semi auto's, they shoot cold and warm and I just record what they do.

I have measurements for these in my logbook but didn't write them on the targets, I'll try to remember to add the info later.

18.6 inch barrel from Herron arms with 1:8 twist and Wylde chamber for those of you that missed the posts a few pages back.
Glass is Leupold Mark AR Mod 1 3-9x40 with mil-dot reticle mounted in Burris QD PEPR.
I'm thinking of swapping out the Rainier Arms Mini Comp for my Allen Gunworks Linear Comp. It's pretty loud and I plan to hunt with this rifle once I find a load it likes so I don't want it to be ringing everyone's ears when we are out in the field and may or may not have hearing protection in.

You may have just saved me some money. If that is what an ACR is capable of with a quality barrel, installed by one of the top gunsmiths, and handloads, I am having second thoughts on whether I want one at all.

That's just one bullet and powder. My best groups so far have been around 1.5moa but a few guys on here have been slightly sub moa.
Notice how light the profile is on my barrel, it has been mentioned earlier that Herron tried a couple ultra light profile barrels and accuracy was affected. This is probably one of those. I bought it used. I still think it can do better though, I have a lot more combinations loaded up to try and even if 1.5moa is as good as it gets that's still pretty good for a battle rifle.
I'm not sure what you are expecting to see but maybe you should try the precision forums, if you want to see a gas piston operated semi auto do sub moa consistently your expectations may be a little high.

If I am going to pay for a premium barrel, I expect at least moa or better, and I certainly don't consider moa precision shooting.
I have fired factory ARs that shot well under moa, some in the 1/2moa range, so I was hoping for at least moa.

Well, I think your expectations might be a little high but some of the guys with Herron or Questar barrels are doing MOA or slightly better.
Not really an apples to apples comparison if you compare it to an AR though. The ACR is a piston operated rifle which will hurt accuracy slightly. Of all the non restricted black rifles I've shot the ACR is the most accurate other than the SL8-4 but I think the ACR can do the same as some of the other guys have proven with their handloads in their rifles. My barrel is extremely light profile and probably affects it's accuracy potential. I'm not giving up on it though, I have a lot of different loads made up ready to test.

So I took my 300BLK barrel for a test run last night, only needed 3 rounds to figure out that it needed more gas. Today I took it apart and opened up the gas port from 0.1 to 0.125 inch. Hopefully that's all it needs. It was locking back on the carrier instead of the bolt face so it was close just not quite enough.

Keep it light. A 223 bush gun isn't supposed to weigh 10 lbs either.

If I do go with an ACR, it won't be a bush gun, it will be for target shooting, and shooting some coyotes, and I don't target shoot, or hunt coyotes in the bush. My current varmint/coyote rifles all weight around ten pounds scoped.

Mine is out shooting the sl8 I used to have.
Consistent at .8 to .9 moa. I mean a real .8, not it shoots group here and there, but consistent.
If I know I'm looking at hunting coyotes at 400+ yards, I'll grab my tikka .223 tactical.
But the acr is stacking them up so far...

just about ready to pull the trigger and get myself a herron converted acr. whats the best barrel blanks to have him use? and is 223 wylde with 1 in 8 twist a good choice for plinking with cheap bulk ammo and hunting with heavier bullets?

Wylde with 1:8 is a good all around combination.
Have him use whatever blank he has in stock, Ian doesn't usually work with cheap stuff which is one of the reasons his conversions are more expensive. I think he usually uses Bartein blanks but any high quality blank will be fine in stainless or chromolly.
Be sure to post lots of pics when you get it :D

I'll make sure to post some pics with some groups when I get it. Just waiting on a reply from him on total cost and then everything should be good. Any suggestions for heavy bullets that aren't too long to fit in the mags?

I think anything 75gr or less will fit the mag. I have been working with 60 and 62gr mostly when not playing with 55gr. I like Nosler and Hornady for price.

I've had really good luck with hornady 75 bthp.
Go for a bartlein, krieger, shilen, etc.

Just got done ordering my acr and barrel from Herron arms. It's going to take about a month to get it all. I'm not very patient but I guess it gives me time to figure out what I want for accesories. This is my first "black rifle" and I'm pretty excited to get it. Can anyone suggest a good quick release mount and scope? I was thinking maybe an aim point for plinking and a good quality variable power scope for hunting and load development. Also what would be a good muzzle brake and flash hider? And last question, will a geiselle 3 gun trigger or any other ar trigger drop right in the acr?
