Another custom 6xc!

Amazing what can happen when you take a little advice and do some testing. Today i was up at the spot shooting some steel. I got a couple pounds of H4350 and decided to run it under the 115 vld. So I cranked out 30 rds at 39 gr and 30 rds at 39.5 gr. I had several 8 inch steel disks out around the 700m mark. I took a guess at the dope and let one go. My spotter gave me a minor correction and the second rd sent the plate flying. I went on to shoot 2 more plates on consecutive shots. Wow that seems pretty good I thought. So we carried on banging away at steel for a few hours including a 3rd rd hit on a steel plate at about 700m with a nice tuned M1A dmr. That was satisfying. Anyways at the end i fired two 5 rd groups at 425m with both the 39 and 39.5 gr loads. The 39 gr load measured 2.2 inches and the 39.5 gr load measured 1.72 inches and 425m. Needless to say I'm pretty happy with that. I'm sure it would have been smaller if I had a smaller aiming mark.
I'll post a pic of the groups when I get a chance. Wonder if I can get the Dtacs to perform like that?
Oh and I did nothing to the brass. It was brand new straight out of the bag too. Bullets were pointed. Velocity on the 39gr load was between 3014-3022 and on the 39.5 load it was between 3046-3055.

The 39.5 gr load did leave a slight scuff from the ejector and the bolt was slightly sticky to lift. I'll back it off a bit and see how it goes.

22lbs? Sweet. I was thinking of tac rifle. I'm still a tac and service rifle shooter but I did enjoy hanging out with you folks at the Farky last year.

Bucky well the hunt was on for about 10 days from now. Was going to head up to the arrow lakes area to find turkey and maybe an elk. Wasn't going to make up for the bison hunt that I gave back. Logistics were to much to handle with limited resources. But now it looks like I'm going to be shooting at other moving targets(hopefully not) by the 8th of Oct. I guess hunting will have to wait til next year.

Have a great time out hunting, by next year I could be in the Kelowna area so we will be some what closer, have fun with that new cal of yours.
Cheers

I'm using Norma. I think the pressure signs were most likely because they weren't coated with HBN very well. My tumbler died just as I put them in so the only got about 5 minutes of shaking. I have a new one now and they look way better. Hopefully the pressure goes down just a little.
I feel safe shooting them as is but I'm sure the primer pockets are getting a workout and I have limited brass so far.

Extractor marks or caved primers?

Little shy on the headspace can cause flat primers sometimes. Might be worth a check.

Great shooting it sounds like anyway man!

A little of both actually. A very small extractor scuff and a little cratering. The bolt was just slightly sticky at the top of the lift. I'm thinking properly coated bullets will ease off the pressure.

Thanks Bucky. I'm looking for any info at all on this bullet not just in a 6xc. So where are you seating them?

Seems all the bullets I have tried in my 6BR like to be Jambed around 10 thou,I have always started on the lands with the Berger's worked up a decent group and then push them 2 thou deeper watching for pressure signs. I believe they are doing around 2875 fps in my rifle with 30.7 grs of Varget,I have also used R15 with excellent results and some of my best groups have come from this powder however I had 10 lbs of Varget left over from my 308 days so I have opted to stay with it and have not been disappointed.
I find bullets, powders, loading and testing to be one of the best parts of the shooting experience, one day I will try a different Berger and start testing all over again. Oh I forgot...thats what I use my 243 for.:D
Good luck.
Cheers Bucky

Ok thanks! I'll start them on the lands and figure it out from there. Sounds like people feel they are a little more forgiving that VLDs to seat and almost on par with sierras.
