Armalite AR180B Frequently Asked Questions, revised Dec. 26/07

Scope

Can anybody recommend a good scope for the ar-180b? I am thinking about a red dot but would also like to look at a small size scope for the rifle, for that longer distance feeling.

Thanks

i'm putting a Weaver rim fire 4x28 on mine, nice a low profile ,should be able to get it fairly low, and the price isn't crazy. and the mags will of course be blocked to 5.

Is the 20 rnd magazine actually 20 rnds, like a 10/22 banana? or, is the magazine cut of at 5 rngs?

cheers

The 20 round mag is blocked to 5 rounds for the AR-180B, as it is a mag designed for a centrefire semi-automatic rifle. The 10-22 is a rimfire semi-auto, so mag limits do not apply. Mag limits do not apply for a magazine built for a bolt or pump action centrefire rifle. Also, 10 round AR-15 pistol mags can be used in it, as pistol mags are limited to 10 rounds. The law states that it doesn't matter what the mag is used in, it is only what the mag was built for that matters.

"...What add on parts do you have on it?..."

Here was the shopping list for this particular project:

- 'ACE' skeleton buttstock (custom trimmed to my length of pull)
- standard AR-15 buffer tube (also custom trimmed to my length of pull)
- 'Troy Industries' folding BUIS (front and rear)
- 'Leupold' Prismatic 1x14mm scope (etched 'circle plex' reticle viewable even with illumination turned off [not a holosight or red-dot])
- standard Picatinny rail stock trimmed to size for the upper receiver and precisely matched to the rearward end of the upper rail on the quad-rail forestock (unless you look closely, it looks like a single uninterrupted rail running the length of the rifle between the front and rear BUIS)
- 'Midwest Industries' quad-rail forestock
- 'Tango Down' rail covers
- 'Yankee Hill Machine' Picatinny rail bipod mount (seen on the forward end of the forestock's lower rail)

During the process of disassembly, the factory iron sights - front and rear - were removed, along with the factory scope mount base plate on the upper receiver. Due to the rifle's construction, these factory components had to be taken off permanently with a grinder ...and - in the case of the factory front sight - very carefully due to its close proximity with the rifle's gas system. Where possible, metal components were parkerized, then the entire rifle was refinished with baked KG GunKote (black) prior to final reassembly.

Since 'your mileage may vary' in terms of cost and availability (with some components no longer being exported from the U.S. for a private sale), I won't quote specific prices or sources; for example, I purchased the buttstock from Brownells about a year or so ago while you were still able to ...now they will no longer ship it (or much else, for that matter) to a private purchaser in Canada.

If you're having a problem locating a source for some of these items, all I can suggest is "...Google is your friend..." ...but enter into cross-border 'grey market' deals at your own risk.

the picture above has got me thinking, if a put on a midwest industries or stormwerz rail, and the cut the rear sight off to lower my scope, are there any of the back up sights like the Yankee Hill taht can go on to those rails and still line up with the factory front sight.

No, you will not find a stock back up site that will line up.

Also, if you remove the rear sight you can not use a Stormwerkz base.

This probably isn't a bad thread to post a recent picture of my own AR-180B:

hi there guys,
My first post and it is to say I just got a 180b from Klondike in Edmonton yesterday and was glad to find this place with all the great info. Was looking for something else and there was this used 180b with only 200 rounds through it, so knowing how hard they are becoming to get I had no choice.
Hoping do do some of the mods listed and "Slaughter coyotes like a damn".

My questions Terry, how is the pic rail fastened on the upper receiver? Was it welded or bolted? I want to get this done first so I can mount the scope. I like the Stormwerks mount but I really like the "one peice" look yours has with the MI forestock.

Thanks for all the great info and effort on the FAQ post.

Update:
Well I just ordered the MI quadrail from wolverine and a 12" Aluminum Gunsmith Rail Blank .Can hardly wait!

Now the next Question: where to buy the 'Troy Industries' folding BUIS (front and rear)

Thanks again.

The rail was fastened to the upper receiver with screws (the work was done by a gunsmith).

Mine were purchased from the same gunsmith who worked on the rifle ...Casey at 'Tactical Ordnance':

I was just on the Armalite website and I couldn't find an AR-180B listed anywhere on the site as a production rifle. They have parts listed but no rifle. This is starting to look like they are dropping it. Has anyone heard anything official?

I'm working on a project that requires I know the answer to my own question about availabiltiy of the AR-180B, so I emailed Armalite. I received a prompt reply, as follows:

"The 180B is not scheduled for 2009 production. The model may become available in 2010."

Now you know as much as I do.

They are still available on the EE sometimes. There is a really nice one on there if you have the money. I got a brand new one on the way, I feel so special. I wasn't aware that production was at a stand still. I'm still waiting for a reply from Wolverine in regards to the Midwest accessories for this rifle.

I was thinking of casting some ar 180B-2 aluminum lowers .What i would like to know if there would be a market ? " all registered and legal ". Does anyone have any input to give any opinions are welcome please.
