Armalite AR180B Frequently Asked Questions, revised Dec. 26/07

Ok I wanted to buy an AR180 B - non restricted, but after I saw and read what could happen to the hinge on the lower receiver, I got very concerned.

> How often does this happen?

> Why does it happen?

> Can it be prevented?

> Could it be repaired if it breaks?

> Would the repair last and how much do they charge?

Thanks for any tips and advice, guys.

not to be rude...answer is you buy one you take a chance. there is other choices

I really don't like the AR-180B trigger pull and wanted to replace the trigger with an AR-15 match type. Although the FAQ says the trigger can be replaced, I emailed Armalite and they told me that it can't be replaced with an AR-15 trigger. What's the deal? Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks!

I think the only difference is the length of the hammer and trigger pins so just use the factory pins with the Ar-15 fire control group.

Ok guys,
One question on the installation of the midwest industries tactical forearm.

What is the purpose of trimming the 5/16 ths of an inch off the guide rod. I realize the rod secures the top of the original forearm and there is no use for the extra length when you use the MI forearm. But when I reassembled the rifle without trimming the piece off everything went back together and seamed to work as normal(mind you i have not fired it yet, still trying to find out before i do). As far as I can determine the only reason to have to trim it off is so the guide rod goes far enough in to close the rifle up, but again mine closes up and works.
Anyway just a question.

Thank

Note: I have not used, installed, or handled the MI forearm.

I always thought you trim the guide rods so they can go forward far enough to close the rifle without hitting the part of the MI rail that clamps to the barrel. Since yours closes, I'm no longer sure why. Maybe they updated it?

Hey Arctic let me know how that goes. I've got the same item in the mail to me and rather than mess around i think i would like to use you as the test monkey.

ok, Stay tuned for further info as i find it out.

Thanks for your input armedsask, MI hasn't drilled the part to accept the guide rod at all, but everything fits well and there is no interference.
I'm going to give wolverine a call on monday and failing that I'll also send an email off to midwest industries. (although any time I have tried to contact them through email in the past they have completely ignored me).

Ps. in response to your signature Amedsask:

I'll still have the(UNREGISERED) guns and ammo I have stashed in the HNRGHTEYFNRF under the ENHERHENRH. ( renamed for security sake). LOL

All Right, I Have the answer to my own question.

I talked with Ryan At Wolverine and he talked with his gunsmith about it and was told that if the gun closes up normal that there is no reason to trim the 5/16ths off of the guide rod. Seems that they have correctly drilled the holes to accept the guide rod in this latest batch of hand guards. (you were right Armedsask, thanks)
Going to go and fire it this afternoon.

Thought I'd give the reader's of this thread a sneak peak at my current project. I got sick of removing my gasblock to clean the piston (I use a free float handguard) so I decided to build a gas piston that removed out the front of the rifle.

The one I'm building is all stainless with a two piece gas piston. The piston and rod are separate pieces but thread together, so it it pretty much one piece. The design is in the prototype building stage and I have no idea if I will make more than one. If there is demand, and I don't have to do any major redesigns after testing, we'll see. I'm hoping to have it finished this weekend.

I'm thinking if I decided to go into production the piston assembly would be sold as a package with a free float handguard. Probably in the $500 range, but I'd have to crunch the numbers. If production for consumer sale does happen, I will have to make a version that works with the MI handguard as it seems lots of people have them.

Armedsask, Doesn't a sneak peek usually come with a picture of the project?
Nothing much to see yet and last time I posted a solid model the mods got all pissy. Busy doing some redesigns on the piston to make it much easier to build on the manual lathe, which would translate greatly to CNC production, if that happens.

"Sneak peek" may have been the wrong term to use. Advance notice, perhaps? ;)

ok so would a normal slip on rubber grip work on a ar-180b. And are the companies posted at the begining of this thread still shipping rails and stock adapters to Canada? Sorry i just ordered mine tonight and am excited :D

ACE won't ship to Canada, I'm going to have a stock shipped to my sister then have her mail it here. If under a hundred bucks it should be ok to mail it. Josh is still shipping from stormwerkz, I got my stock adapter last week. As for a rail blank, I have an extra 12" i am willing to part with.

Yeah, Stormwerkz still ships to Canada. I bought all the parts required to put a folding stock mechanism on it and still retain the original stock. It adds about an inch onto the length of the rifle, so if you don't have long arms, I wouldn't recommend it.

I'd like to eventually put a cocking handle on it similar to the one on the original AR-180 model, but don't know where to find one. I have a brother who is about to finish a machinist course in college, so maybe I'll get him to make me one once he gets a lathe of his own.

Can I replace the front pivot pin with something that is easier to remove and not worry about losing the little washer clippy thingy? ie: is there a kns push pin or something that will fit- I don't have a caliper so I don't know the diameter of the pin.

The KNS push pins are as follows:

Pivot Pin - .250" x 1.250"
Take Down Pin - .250" x 1.000"
