Armalite AR180B Frequently Asked Questions, revised Dec. 26/07

is the quick detach rail from midwest any good? or should i permanently attach a rail to the top of the reciever?

I wouldn't go with the quick attach. The whole dovetail mounting seems pretty mickey mouse to me.
As soon as I get home next week I am taking mine to the gunsmith to have a milled down pic rail bolted on to match the height of the MI hand guards rail.....after he removes the dovetail and rear site of course. Teclaydon did the same thing,He posted a pic in post #266 and I liked the result he had.
Then going to spend some real stupid money on some kickass optics:rockOn:

New 180b-2

Found a local dealer who had one stashed in his basement from the last batch before they stopped production. Bought it two days ago and have run close to 200 rounds through it. Only had one failure to feed and it was in the first five shots following the first 10 as singles shoot then clean stage. It has really smoothed out since new and I am very happy with it. Accuracy seems good, wish I had better eyes but I'll be getting a stormwerkz rail soon so I can mount a scope and then I'll see what kind of groups it will make, it ejects all empties about 5 feet forward and 5 feet right which makes collecting brass nice, .

Excellent info here guys, thanks to everyone who has contributed, Took 3 sittings to make it through all the posts but it was worth it.

Seems like an excellent gun and I'm looking forward to Armalite starting up production again so the aftermarket starts up with some more accessories for it.

Wanted to share my 180B with you guys. I put a RRA 2 stage match trigger in it. The scope is a Bushnell Tactical Elite 6500 series. All Midwest hardware. While the stock makes the gun look very different, it fits me well and gives me much more stability for precision shooting. At least semi-precision for what it is.

After reading the whole thread and the FAQ's, I still didn't find the answer to this question:

Can the LAR 15 pistol (10 rnd) magazines be used in the AR180 without modification?

The reason I ask is that I'm looking at buying an AR180 (non-restricted version) and have read here on Gunnutz that it isn't illegal to use the 10 rnd LAR 15 pistol magazines in a rifle, because the defining point in the law is what the magazine is built for, not what it's being used for.

The mag fit but lot of jam. It's 100% legal if the mag are marked « pistol mag »

FTF + Failure To Feed (they jam)

Since the AR180B is discontinued has the price or demand gone up?
They are a reasonable non-restricted rifle IMHO

Just blasted off 10 mags full from the last batch of Questars mags and not one jam. I was testing for the so called ftf so I ran all 10 mags as fast as I could pull the trigger(was also doing it for the thrill!!)
THEY WORKED GREAT!!

Bolt fails to open

I tried out one of my AR180B. It has rails, Bipod and ACCOG. I had some mag issues with the ones that came win the rifle ( I bought on EE). I tried some new mags, and it works fine. On my last five shots, the bolt would not open nor eject the spent round. Before I take the whole thing apart, any suggestions?

Regards,
Henry;)

If it was not opening, would it be that the hole that taps the gas from the barrel to the piston is lined up properly? I had that problem with mine after getting it in the mail (you know how well Canada Post treats parcels;)).

It could be that it moved out of alignment, during use or handling, if the front sight post screws were even a little bit loose.

It sounds very similar to mine, where the bolt would either not open at all, or only half open after firing. A quick realignment of the front sight post fixed it right up, once I realised what was wrong.

I understand this may be considered utter blasphemy, and ultimately defeat the purpose of the AR-180B being non-restricted, BUT:

Because the AR-180B lower uses AR-15 parts, how close dimensionally are the two? Wondering if you could modify the rear of the AR-15 lower, to allow mating to an AR-180B upper. All theoretical, and would only come up in the eventuality that Armalite would not warranty a broken lower (for whatever reason).

You can't. I've been through the whole project years ago.

The distance from the barrel center line to the pivot pin is different. As well, the distance of from the trigger group to the mag catch is different.

In short, it can't be done.

Took my new toy to the range today, and didn't have much luck. It wasn't cycling, at all, so I figure the gas block was out of alignment, so I pulled out the calipers at home:

I moved the gas block so it is about 1mm back from the point that the barrel diameter maxes out. Does this sound about right?

I also had a feeding issue, and while I only had 2 mags (1 Tango Down, 1 "NHMTG"(?)) it didn't seem to rely on the mag.

While I was only cycling the bolt manually, the rounds seemed to jam, just as they started to leave the mag. My feed ramps look like what was pictured already:

So I'm guessing I already have the M4 feed ramps.

However, I also noticed that each round that I cycled was being scored, and the marks looked like they were jamming into the notches for the bolt lugs. Would I be able to reduce scoring, and make it feed nicer by doing some polishing on my ramps?
