ATT's what you need to know

I have a question in regards to a short term ATT. I purchased a handgun and right now i am waiting for it to be mailed. I know one outcome is it's gonna be left at my door, but the other is a required signature and it will be left at my post office. How do i go about getting a short term ATT to bring it home?

When you KNOW that the parcel is at the Post Office (Card left for pick up) you call the usual 1800 731 4000 (can't remember which extension but it's the one for ATTs). Request an ATT to pick up from post office, they'll need the Post Office address (They'll already have yours on their screen from your PAL). They'll give you an ATT number and you'll be good to go with just the number on a slip of (your own) notepaper. Be sure to observe the date/time limits they will tell you.

Just figured I'd chime in with my ATT experience for Alberta for what its worth. I ordered my pistol from Wolverine. I'm a member at the Shooting Edge here in Calgary and included my membership number with my order. Pistol arrives at my door a few weeks later, and a few days after that I get my registration in the mail. So I call the Alberta CFO and ask for an ATT and the nice lady says no problem, she just verified my name and address and literally five minutes later emails me my long term ATT for all of Alberta. Sweet and easy.

I can answer for Quebec. I bought my first handgun about 2 months ago.

1. follow a security course for handgun
2. Fill in the form, have your wife and 2 persons who know you signed the form.
3. Mail it to CFC and wait for the "restricted" class be added to your existing non restricted PAL.

4. Get a shooting club membership
5. Order a handgun from a store.

6. The CFC will call one of the person who signed the restricted pal form to verify if you don't intend to make some trouble

7. The Quebec provincial Police who is responsible to issue the ATT (in Quebec) will call you and ask for a proof of shooting club
membership. Fill in the ATT form, and send it with a photocopy of your membership card. Write TBD as the gun's serial number.

8. You will receive 2 ATT, One for the transportation from the seller to your home and one for the transportation from your home to
the club (period of validity will be less than 1 year because may be you won't be member of the club next year!).

9. Then the seller can ship you the gun

10. You receive the gun, then your receive the ATT and then the handgun registration.

ouf!!!
true but you forgot on glorious point LAW 9 EXAM. and the kicker of it too is if u let your membership laps by ONE DAY u need to redo the exam ....... :kickInTheNuts:

Temporary ATT

Hey guys, I have my ATT for Alberta already. When I bought a new pistol recently I had to get a 'Temporary ATT' to take the pistol from the counter to the door (I was amazed at that - didn't seem to make sense, but oh well - federal laws).

I recently bought a pistol second hand off the E.E. & during the transfer phone call the CFO rep asked what day I would be picking up the firearm so they could issue another temporary ATT so that "you can transport it home from the seller's gun club" - am I missing something ? I thought My regular ATT allowed me to transport restricteds between my home & any gun club/range in Alberta?

(transfer is done, the pistol is in my name, just need to do the exchange)

Anyone clarify ?

ok. one more question.

In the list of things to ask for on your ATT one of the abilities is "You want to be able to transport all legally posessed firearms, which means you can borrow them from friends and family provided you have the registration certificate". So does that mean you'd only need one ATT and no more, even if you have 4 handguns?

Yes, your ATT means YOU are allowed to transport. It's not a 'per firearm' permit.

Dito....good point!!!!

No. Non restricted - same day take home yes. Restricted bought from a store you need a temp ATT for the day of pickup. HERE'S where it gets weird. If you have an ATT, you still need to get a 'temp' ATT to carry the firearm from the counter to the door - I kid you not.

Ok. So once I get my official ATT, if I go to a gun store and buy a handgun, I could walk out
Of there that day with it, instead of waiting for a temporary ATT?

I just did my RPAL course today and asked the friendly folks at Phoenix when I was there about that very same thing. They confirmed I would need a temporary ATT to take home my new purchase and even a used gun from someone else regardless if I already had a long term ATT.

So I just got my ATT over the phone. But I pretty much didn't get a word in with the guy before he said "Send your club letter and have a good day." I called them again asking if I could be read the terms of my ATT and he said he couldn't its being processed.

Did I just get F****?

The conditions on my ATT state that I can take restricted firearms to any range in Alberta as well as any licensed gunsmith and any border crossing provided I have the necessary U.S. entry papers.

My understanding of this is that if you buy a gun from a dealer who is also a gunsmith you don't need a ST-ATT to bring the gun home. Last time I bought a handgun at Cabelas the gun checker guy said I shouldn't need a ST-ATT next time as they are in the process of getting gunsmithing certification.

Yeah, he just didn't want to be helpful. Both times I've called for ST-ATT's they've been very helpful and emailed my permits to me within 10 minutes. And even changed the date on one.
