I've been visiting this thread off and on for awhile, thinking how this little rifle looked like it would be a really fun plinker/coyote/back-yard-varmint rifle. While in town yesterday, I found myself driving right by Cabela's, and with some time to spare, I stopped in to see if they happened to have any in stock.
They did! The guy behind the counter had no idea what I was asking about, but as I turned to go I spotted it right on the rack behind him. He even handed it to me without checking my papers!
And...sorry, but I just didn't get that warm fuzzy feeling. Love the design and the super-compact size...but, picking it up I was amazed at how heavy it felt. To me, light and compact go hand in hand; compact but overweight isn't that great. And the puzzling aspect of it was how thick and chunky the frame was, even (especially!) in areas like around the magwell. I don't know how much mass would be lost if there were some milling done in that area, but as it sits this is an uncomfortably porky gun for what it is. It's not that heavy
per se as a hunting rifle...but considering the tiny new ultra-compact aluminum frame/receiver and the short barrel, the expectation is for this to be light as a feather...and it's not.
I'm not even stating that I won't buy one, might still do. But, right next to it on the rack was a Sig Cross, which I naturally also had to "coon-finger" a little, and by comparison it made the Bison seem even less svelte. The Cross was delightful; light, quick-handling, terrific folding stock; if it had been in .308 instead of 6.5, I would have bought it on the spot.
When I picked up the Bison, my first thought was "wow...this thing ain't light". But a few minutes later, when I picked up the Cross, my first thought was "I like this!" and my second thought was "This really makes the Bison feel like a pig".
I already have a Ruger Ranch in .223...lighter, cheaper and quite likely more accurate than the Bison. Hmmm...
I would strongly suggest to anyone considering this cool little rifle to actually pick one up and handle it before buying one. Might prevent later disappointment.
