big bore choice?

The 404 Jeffery fires a 400gr .423" bullet at ~2150 fps. Seem to recall Ruger did a run of No.1 Tropical rifles in 404 Jeffery a number of years ago. A very cool and effective round but maybe some challenges in finding brass and bullets for it.

It was apparently the chambering of choice for a lot of Game Departments in Africa.

I think 404 Jeff brass is becoming more popular as it is the case parent for some of the newer short, fat magnums...

Moose are very susceptible to shredded lungs, whether accomplished with 3000 or 300 ft lbs of energy. Lots of our huge AK-Yukon bulls are still done in every year with 30-30s and 303s.

And, some are lost every year with poor shooting using 300, 338 and bigger magnums.

Shot placement, not energy, is what you need to be concerned about.

last world record was taken with a plain jane .303 and not even a scope on it .....

I'd get the 416. It has the trajectory of the 375 with the energy of the 458, win win.
I had two of them but can't hang on to them. One was a 700 KS, the other a Sako 75 Hunter.

I hear the M70 in 300 WSM is also a good place to start...
The 'smith would have to do quite a bit of work with the 300WSM. 300 RUM would be better since it's based on the 404J case. The 375H&H is a more logical choice as the barrel channel will need minimal if any modification, boltface is the right size. Feedramp will need a bit of work, and magazine length is perfect. My total cost was $2450 which included the purchase of the donor rifle.
CZ makes the Safari series in 404J. I think you could also use a Remington 30A (M1917) action as well.
Getting a bit off topic though.

I'd get the 416. It has the trajectory...

Got a supply of 416 caliber 340gr MTH V15 Cutting Edge Bullets (0.78 bc). Going to see how these shoot from my 416 Ruger with the Nikon Omega 3-9x40mm which has a BDC 300 reticle. The Nikon website has a calculator for calibration.

Should do 2500+ fps MV - to be verified - which equals about 2400 ft-lbs at 800 yards.
