bringing together all the 'what should my first hunting rifle be' thread advice

It would have been a great addition to add that there are primarily three well know firearm companies that produce a decent variety of left hand, bolt action rifles. The big three in this regard are Savage, Browning and Tikka. There are a few older production rifles that produced left hand bolt guns, like the Remington BDL; And the pre 2006 Winchester Model 70, and the Sako Model 75 and L691. Also, Weatherby has produced a few left hand bolts in their mag series.

Browning makes a semi auto left hand eject. There are few more companies that make custom or semi custom left hand bolt actions as well, but higher prices are attached to most of these models. Most will not likely be a new gunner's choice. And at least one pic of a left hand bolt would have been a little icing on the cake on this initial post.

Also there are single shot rifles (in most commonly known calibers) and double barrel rifles out there too that generally have a limited number of calibers available in their configurations.

Great post! As a newbie looking for a deer rifle, it is great to have all of this information in the same place. The notes on ammo availability are very helpful. It is not always easy to determine if a particular caliber will be easily available. I like the Canadian Tire test. If Canadian Tire carries a variety of a particular caliber then it should be easy to find.

Cheers

I have a Remington 700 sps in .308 with a bushnell 4200 elite tactile and I love it. I got it for a good price and can hit a fly at 200 yards, I won't shoot at an animal that far but for hunting dear and bear it has no problems.

Great introduction. Thanks for the post.

Personally I think one of my first rifles will be a .308 or 30-06. Both are tried and true cartridges with great availability WTSHTF.

Good read, thanks for the sticky!

I have one dumb question - are game animals color blind? I was thinking I would prefer brighter clothing in the woods for safety reasons.

Thank you! I'm new to all this and this post has been the most streamlined info I have found from a lot of websites and forums.

Newbee to hunting looking for my first rifle and this was the first discussion I read. Very helpful and now I know I am going with a 30-06.
