I'm not so sure that they would be "off limits" per se. For me, they would be a bit heavy & bulky to want to lug around in the bush. I'm just far too lazy for that kind of lugging. I like the light weight modern bolt guns such as my Rem 700 Mountain (.270) for big game, Tikka T3 Lite (.223) for small game and my XCR (.223 or 6.8 SPC) for pest control.
Awesome post. I'm a newb. Going to get my PAL soon. This post has a lot of info. thanks.
Oh yeah. I also know next to nothing, so this thread is perfect for me. acquired a taste for shooting in the CF. Would like to work up to hunting in small steps.
Interesting responses.....as a newbe, this happend to be the "first" thread I have read on your forum, who would have thought eh? I'm actually on this site to learn more about the Marlin XS7-308 as it was one of a couple of entry level guns that have been recommended by people I respect and whom suggested it might be worth considering, but I notice its not on the list.....regards g
I found this to be a great help, very informative.
As I'm still trying to get into the equipment exchange where would one suggest looking for something like a savage 99?
Very informative, thanks. noob question tho; how important/beneficial is a mauser extractor for a hunting rifle? More specifically, would a Winchester Model 70 Featherlight be too "featherlight" for 30-06 caliber?
I wouldn't think twice about the extractor issue. It does seem to come up primarily in relation to custom dangerous game rifles built on older actions. In my personal opinion not an issue on recently manufactured mainstream hunting rifle. I would buy a Featherweight because they are pretty. I would go probably .308, but not sure of your exact needs beyond that.
Thanks for all the great info! It's very much appreciated! As a bright-eyed and bushy tailed hunter, I think my first rifle will be a Marlin 336 in 30-30. I've always loved lever-actions and I haven't heard one negative thing said about it as a deer gun. Thanks again!
As someone who just posted a thread of my own about this (being a newbie) this provided a lot of insight and opened my eyes to a lot more options! Thanks OP!
This is a great thread, thanks RG, I appreciate you spending time to get this info posted. I have been doing a lot of research and wished I'd read this first. I've been PALed for almost a year and still looking for my first PB. Thanks again.
What about including the price range of the different calibers? I know it can differ greatly depending on bullet weight and make of the cartridge and prices will rise and drop due to market changes etc. However, as a newb to firearms in general, I want to get to the range to get a good amount of practice before taking a shot at game. So what would be a good round to practice with based on 'bang for your buck'?
