Great timing on the thread, 'Looky. I have been looking at the BRNO's lately and was wondering the same thing. Thanks to Meroh and jes for the explanation.

Is a bit curious for some - I do not think the BRNO rimfire rifles were made in order - I have a pretty much original BRNO No. 1 - but is "55" on both the barrel and the receiver - left side - which apparently means that was the year it was made - 1955 - so was other models being made and sold at the same time?? So is likely that more than one Model was made at the same time - not that No. 2 replaced No. 1 until replaced with No. 3, etc. I do not think they were made and sold in sequential Model order.
Go here - this seems to be a "blog" that summarizes that outfit's understanding of the history of the BRNO rimfires - I suspect is supposed to be logo's for the three pictures at the bottom - but for some reason, I do not see those ... https://jggunsmith.wordpress.com/2019/09/30/a-bit-about-brno-22-rifles/

Here are a couple of pics of my #3 and #4. Pictures are deceiving, both have the same barrel and stock length.
The #3 was manufactured in 1949. It has the less common checkered walnut stock and nipple crown at the end of the barrel. #3’s have hame a palm swell on the fore end. #3’s were manufactured from 1949 to 1956. Most #3’s have a standard crown and non checkered stock with the palm swell.
The #4 was manufactured in 1956. This is also the first year of manufacture.
