Building a Classic Sporting rifle

I tried a synthetic stock once, but it wasn’t worth the sleepless nights it caused.

I'm with you there man!

And wowie that rifle is looking better every time I see it. Honestly in my eyes the only way to improve on that rifle is if it was built by John Rigby at the turn of the century.(and that wouldn't really even be visible it would just add to the rifle as a whole)

Yep I hear you there. The gun looks mechanically new, less for some bumps over the last century. Makes me wish I was an Enfield and .303 guy, but Winchester’s is pulling me in more and more as years go by. They sure were ahead of their time with their carbines though, in handling, speed, weight.

This said, something uniquely Commonwealth about the .303 and Enfield’s. On the shore of a NWT lake this week, suspect the moose didn’t appreciate it.

That's a neat find in a place that one could consider the middle of nowhere.

Also interesting fact about Lee Enfields and John Rigby. The carbines were made in royal small arms factory at Enfield lock and John Rigby became the superintendent in 1887 there. So he very well could have handled that rifle or at least could have put some of his styling into it. I'm sure he was more interested in the sporting rifles opposed to the mill contract rifles.

I don't know why I have such issues that plage me in my life for getting things done..but finally this morning I realized I'm never going to finish the silver stock oval I started and get it mailed Wayne. It's the last thing he has been waiting for, it's been almost a year on my end..I do feel bad honestly.

So it's nickel opposed to silver but it's on the way to Wayne's as I type

I ordered this. https://www.newenglandcustomgun.com/proddetail.php?prod=7865

Came to $75 American so just over 100 Canadian and I'll still have to pay import fees and taxes I'm sure. Oh well I'll save the few silver OZ's I bought for an other project.

I think this thread will bring a lot more you your build. You’ll complete it one day and looking back at this will certainly bring some great memory's back. Lots of projects take a long time to complete but there was no story outside of memory. Cool to have such records as this. I’m excited to see it finished. The jealousy will nearly kill me I'm sure.

Or you could of asked me and I could of sold you one for 50 bucks!

Now you tell me haha. Oh well I'm just glad one is finally on the way. Thanks though.

You know, you are correct about that. I'm excited to have this whole thread. In 17 days I will have started this thread 3 years go. So many things have changed in my life and even on this build but it still headed exactly were I had hoped it would go. And it's even better then I had first imagined.

I did just buy this mag for the rifle today. I have a reproduction fish belly mag as seen post 93. But I had the chance to grab a real one so I did. I'll save the repro for another build or use it in my Parker hale custom no1

You’ll getter Evan! I’m hoping to finish my stock project this winter, which is in its third winter now lol. Once the darker colder evenings come, it makes it easier to make time for this kinda stuffs!

I just got word the rifle will be in the mail headed back to me next week.

still lots to do but the stock is now finished and i had a knife made of the same wood the stock is made of to have a matching knife.

if i had to guess what's left to do is, engraving, soldering the rib on the barrel, bluing the barrel and barrel nut, installing the rear sight

there may be more but its getting close either way. ill update with pics when the rifle gets here.

i got a few pics of the stock, ill post better ones when it arrives. the knife and sheath look awesome, same chunk of wood the stock is made out of

Chris and Wayne have done an amazing job on this stock

So i have the rifle back in my possession. I'm so excited about this build still its going very well even after 3.5 years, the rifle just keeps getting better and better. I'm very pleased with how the rifle stock turned out, it couldn't be better.

Chris and Wayne have done an amazing job between supplying the stock blank, roughing it out, fitting it it and finishing it, modifying/installing the butt plate, installing the grip cap and fore end cap, fitting and installing the safety tang. the checkering is perfect. very fine and fitment is so appealing to the eye

since picking the rifle up yesterday, I've soldered the barrel nut to the barrel it self, fitted the extractor grove and installed the rib

the rib and barrel were tinned before installing. it went very well.

i still need to cut the large dovetail for the rear sight base. I'm going to install the ladder and leaf sight into a base then install that into the rib.

the rifle weights 7.5 pounds with the rear sight setup on the scale.

I plan to add a half band on the barrel for for the front sling mount and a sling swivel on the butt stock.

The over all length of the rifle is 39" the barrel length is 19.25" and the length of pull is 14"

The rifle feels and handles so well, its almost all just finish work left. some engraving and blueing really is about it after the sling swivels

I picked up the rifle from the post office the way Wayne shipped it, i was embarrassed for my self. when i mailed it to him it was wrapped in a old box that i rolled around the parts and duct tapped it up. the top 2 pics show how he shipped it back

Ardent, I love the straight comb as well, its one of my favorite feature on the stock.
