Canadian Rangers C19

My father is a member here in NL and they got their rifles a few weeks back. A few guys had feeding issues, my dad included, but they only shot around 35 rounds each. Mags weren't seating correctly and rounds were staying in the mag. I haven't had a chance to shoot it, but will probably get to try it out in the spring some time for bear hunting. Nice rifles though, aside from the feeding issues and the price tag.

I was thinking I would start a new thread here on CGN and aska question, but I figure I'll ask here for now:

What is everyone doing for scope mounting on these? My father has a Vortex with a 1" tube, and I'm thinking of getting a one piece QD mount for it so he can easily take it off for yearly quals. The mount needs to be about 1.5" in height so the scope can clear the rear sight. I have looked at a few mounts and it seems like they're mostly too short. Anyone have any suggestions?

AR style QD mount. Just clears the rear sight with a 4x Leupold on. Would need xtra tall rings if you don’t use the QD style. You can’t qualify with the optic but they won’t stop you from mounting one.

I was looking at an American Defense QD mount, but based on how high the mount is and getting the proper eye relief, it's seems to still be too short. The mount would put it at around 1.35" and I need around 1.5" in height.

It really should... this gun should feed 100%, pure and simple or recall and start again. Why they didn’t buy Rugers and specificy a metal trigger guard, and a pelican case for $1500 all up probably less in a bulk buy, boggles my mind. Then again the government... and these people choose helicopters and jets too.

Sounds cynical I’m happy for the OP, and that they’re buying new rifles / committing to the rangers. But let’s get rifles that work.

Ruger wouldnt let Colt Canada manufacture them

I’ve been waiting so long for this gun and the government kept changing its mind on how they would deploy and when. So glad to finally have it. I think if they do a recall then just the mags need changing. I think it’s a simple fix but you know how that works.

As for the Ruger, they tried them too and the word I got from the military types testing it was sloppy and loud with too many sharp edges. No idea how it would really stack up.

Ruger also is not manufactured in Canada, which is requirement.

Not talking about you Phil, no doubt you know what you’re talking about and deliver advice in a friendly fashion ( for a Frenchman at least :p)

Always happy to read your posts of REAL experience guiding in Africa and Canada

Maybe the mags will break in.

Would have loved to see stainless laminate FN Model 70s instead.

But I see it had to be made in Canada.

stock made in canada action made in canada magazine made in canada hard and soft carrying case made in canada ammo made in canada cleaning tool kit made in canada... what is actually made in canada or fit in canada? maybe the barrel

I personally think my Ruger scout rifle would be better, but Ive shot one of the commercial versions of the Tikka and it was a good rifle. Particularly liked the rotating rear sight, I thought it was pretty good system.

Consulting guides would be a waste of time. I’ve known many guides and their views on firearms are incredibly varied. Perhaps most importantly, many are not really gun enthusiasts.

Before the CRR request for proposal went out, the DRDC in Toronto held workshops with a large number of rangers from the various CRPG’s to figure out what attributes they wanted in the new rifle.

All that input went into a comprehensive report that was never classified — I’ll try to dig it up and post it as it’s a very interesting read.

In a nutshell, they wanted a push feed .308 with 20-22” SS barrel, iron sights with a rail option, and 10rd detachable mag. It had to be lighter and shorter than the No.4 MkI.

They specifically didn’t want a Mauser action — which took the Ruger off the list — and which is why CZ didn’t simply submit the 550 but instead developed the 557 (their first push feed).

There were a couple other reasons why the Ruger was never a candidate but the exclusion of a CRF action was one of the reasons.

Why no CRF is an interesting question.

Let's speculate :)

Some people think you can't single load a CRF like a Ruger from the top

All bolt actions in current military service are push feed as far as I know

Few CRF bolt actions have 10 round detach magazines

CRF rifles are often more expensive to manufacture than PF. Maybe that is the real reason. :)

But I too would love to know the results of the report!
