Chinese SKS type 56 ID FAQ.... feb 19, 2013

sks

Marstar said they were shipping factory 26 but turns out its 625 like the rest just like the unissused mbo48's. Be careful when dealing with them product is ok description is just deceptive. Personally not my pick to deal with.

i dont believe there was any deception , like i said in this write-up the factory codes are not always easy to decipher, especially the ones that were lightly punched .

Having the same feelings toward one I just got from canada ammo.

I grabbed a marstar sks the only problem is there is no factory code on the reciver just 7 digit numbers that match all over the rifle. There is no triangle with a /26\ in it, just the numbers 01 114##

So where was it made?? and when??

Im in the same boat as you, I got my sks from Canadaammo and it only has matching cerial numbers no symbols....

Awesome read! I love history, and guns, so history of guns is just the cats ass for me
Thanks for putting in the work!
It must have taken you many hours.
I may as well ask you as you seem to have some good reference material.
I know the majority of SKS's encountered in Vietnam were built in China and delivered to troops in the North. Were any SKS's built in North Vietnam factories? Or where they all just type 56's stamped with the "hollow star"? Where would be a good place to find info on this matter?

Sorry to be one of 'those guys' but I've read post 1 couple of times and I can't nail down my particular rifle.
I bought one of the Marstar $75 SKS's and I did a preliminary inspection. There are no factory marks that I can see at all. No triangle, no rectangles, no chinese characters....just a 7 digit serial number. The rifle also has a side stock sling buckle.

The serial is 0105###.

Can anyone tell me what info is hidden within that number??

Of course, when I de-cosmo the rifle I may find more info but the receiver...both sides...contain only the number.

BTW, the stock is beautiful and the rifle appears to unused. The magazine is nicely pinned. This is a hell of a deal for a rifle and 1400 rounds!

I have an Sks that takes ak mags but doesn't have factory markings the serial number is 881219x what is it and what's it worth. Has some mumbo jumbo about California on it. Unfired condition all matching parts. What's it worth?

Did up this chart off of Curtton's extensive research and my 1 odd ball 1966 version... pending another project along the same lines...

Santa put one of these gems under my tree...

Seven digit serial, no apparent factory code. I haven't taken it down to clean all the cosmo off yet, might be a one hiding there somewhere. I have a spike bayo, short barrel lug (puts it between '65, and '80), and a silvery circle at the muzzle (I'm guessing from chrome lining).

No matter where it came from, I'll love it! Just looking for some gun gossip.

Stamped Receiver... Type 56 Variation

13. VARIANTS.

e. Sheet metal receiver. Made in factory [0138], [0139],
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

To add to the sticky...

Often there seems to be confusion behind the construction of the Chinese SKS, with some saying that they are stamped vs other countries producing milled. This stamped vs milled refers 99% of the time to component construction, not receiver construction. IE: Trigger groups, etc.

The exception to this is Section 13(e) of this sticky (formal eh?)... The Chinese in the late 60s or early 70s produced a test run of stamped receiver SKS. As stated by Curtton, these were arsenal stamped [0138] and [0139]. Additionally there have been reported examples from arsenals [0144] and [0145]. Others may exist, I personally don't know and I am no expert.

Here are some examples of a stamped receiver Chinese Type 56 from [0138]... Note the pins holding the lug that holds the pressed in barrel, the notches in the stock to accept the pins and the squared off appearance of the receiver in general. The matching recoil spring cover is a match to the gun and does not fit tightly over the rounded edges of the rear of the receiver.

Security Force Markings - Type 56 Variation

In Section 4 of Curtton's original post, he mentioned "Security Police" using the SKS after the AK47 took over as the primary weapon for front line forces in China. The Security Police have also been refered to as "Public Security", "Secret Police" and "Public Security" by western translation.

Chinese Public Security Forces were equipped with SKS with a variety of Arsenal markings. /26\ /016\ /416\ [0140] [0141] and [0145] arsenal stamps have been noted as the most common imported to North America, with the vast majority if not all arriving in the US. In addition to the arsenal stamps on the left side of the receiver along with the serial number and "type 56 carbine" Chinese characters, the Security Force rifles were stamped on the right side of the receiver. These markings are called "Gong-An" (not the best pronounciation, but close). These markings are from a /016\ Type 56 with a 18 million serial number. While only /26\ rifles can be accurately dated, this rifle does fit the features of an 18 million /26\, save for having a pinned barrel which would make it quite possibly from 1974. Just a guess though.
