Have you tried, scotchbrite pads with solvent of your choice. Works for me. I don't think it is too harsh a media for this area, would not suggest using it all over the frame.....

Remove cylinder and run thru dishwasher along with other dishes comes out BNIB minty every time I run mine thru twice a year....sounds nuts i know...no joke It works
Ick! That looks nasty. What kind of filthy dog ammo are you using anyway?
The cylinder on my 629 is discoloured too but from heat not from nasty looking scunge.
1. Quit shooting PMC ammo.
2. Spray with bore cleaner of you choice and let sit for 10 minutes.
3. Use Crest spinbrush, bore cleaner to remove crud (could also use any fine polishing compound)
4. Treat clean cylinder with Froglube to avoid crud buildup in the future.
5. Ignore store specials on PMC ammo.
Brass brush and hoppes always works for me but i clean mine after every trip.
Lead remover cloth works well.
Froglube wikl prevent this?

+1, and also the lead clothes removal
I've given up on trying to keep my stainless cylinders stain free, they will be forever blackened.
