The beat up stock actually works perfectly. No catastrophic damage to be seen, tried it out on my rifle and it locks up firmly and feels as good as my other one. I'm pretty happy with it and I'll figure out later if I'm going to remove the rest of the paint later on.

Anyway, I think this will be the last update for a while because that CQD sling plate is unobtanium in Canada and the wife will have my balls if I cough up for a Wilcox mount and PRI charging handle so soon

Well if you ever get tired of that beat to shlt stock you can always sell it to me for a reasonable price, needless to say i Am very jealous of that stock.

Regardng the trgger guard, the only benefit the magpul has in my opinion is that it covers that hole the grip leaves but there are a few ways to remedy that including that little piece of rubber made by ergo(?) wich i use on my rifle and love, it does not looks too much out of place on a clone.

As for the aimpoint i wouldnt change the optic if you prefer the 2moa, just the mount. Aestethicaly they look just the same.

One last thing guys, please don't paint you rifle and then faux-wear it, just go out and use your rifle it will wear in fast believe me and not look so fake :d

Haha, will keep you in mind for sure :)

I can't leave well enough alone so I'm probably going to lose the Magpul trigger guard tonight and dig out a standard Colt one from my spare parts bin tonight. Not going to bore everyone with new pictures until I source out a few more parts. I like the Magpul trigger guard just because it gives a bit more space, but in all honesty, the standard trigger guard works just fine even with gloves when I run my C7. On my Mod 0 clone, it's just my OCD getting to me to switch it out for a standard Colt trigger guard, lol!

I think I'll take your advice and keep the PRO but I am itching for the Wilcox mount so Brownells it is. Might be a while though as the wife is on my case about buying stuff. The more I see it in my shopping cart, the more I want hit confirm to order though, lol!

So, in an act of desperation to acquire a CQD rear sling plate, something which is clearly unobtanium, I tried my luck with a *gag* airsoft sling plate.

There are a ton of these on the market, ranging from really crappy copies made of God-knows-what, to some pretty convincing clones. I picked one designed for "GBB" or gas-blow-back rifles, not "AEG"s or automatic electric rifles because the GBB versions have near identical dimensions as the real deal.

The one I happened to order looked nearly identical photos of early model CQD mounts:

This image was pulled from CQD's website.

https://1.bp.########.com/-qs702Ca94sM/Tyeo_MmL6ZI/AAAAAAAAB6k/BrCyuV6MtMQ/s1024/IMG_0453.JPG

This was pulled from AR15.com

Here's one of the newer models (pulled from CQD's website) with a recess in the plate to mate better to the lower receiver:

rsm1_1.png

And here's my airsoft clone next to the factory Colt LE6920 rear plate:

https://4.bp.########.com/-iICnOPkD6TI/V9LudR4YV2I/AAAAAAAAj0M/4qkW1tfynRkUSaXEZd1Y-bIMfweQCDl9QCPcB/s1600/DSC_0415.JPG

The first thing I did was line them up and the dimensions were nearly identical. Good. It was not a perfect fit however and as you can tell from the picture I did have to remove some material from the plate for it to fit around the buffer tube.

This was a true testement to the material used to make this airsoft clone. It was a right pain in the butt to file this thing down to fit, and much blood, sweat and tears flowed before it fit. I seriosly doubt it was cast from pot metal and I don't think it will break or snap on me.

The spelling could be better though, lol!

"PULLCIROLE WARRAR"

"CLOSE QUARTERS OEFENSE"

I had to index the plate by eyeballing it as it did not have the recessed bit as seen on the Colt rear plate. I got it as close as I could, cranked down on the buffer tube nut and it wasn't going anywhere.

Anyway, after a lot of filing and a lot of cursing, the rest was easy and looked pretty close to the real deal. I'll rock this until I find a real one, but something tells me that might be a while. Now to track down a Wilcox mount for the Aimpoint and a PRI Gasbuster charging handle, haha!

Well, I presented my hard work with the CQD sling plate to the ARF crowd and my enthusiasm came to grinding halt, lol! I should have realized this as well, but when I was installing the thing, I didn't give much thought to it.

The material the airsoft clone is made of is not really a concern as I am satisfied that the thing is made out of some really hard steel and not prone to snapping, cracking or breaking in any way. The concern is that there is no indexing "bulge" as on factory sling plates and the real deal.

Though I cranked it on, the only thing keeping it timed correctly is friction. If in the unlikely even that it does slip, I would lose my selector detent pin and spring, resulting in an unpleasant day out.

So the search continues for this elusive $30 part that is somehow a threat to US national security in terms of ITAR.

Some updates though, I did manage to get my hands on a replacement KAC for the top rail. It's the newer generation RAS version, not the older RIS (which is the correct one for the purist clone builders apparently).

This unit came previously enjoyed and the owner decided to krylon the thing with a little tan paint. I tossed it straight on for photos and see how it would look with my previously enjoyed LMT SOPMOD Gen Juan stock to see if it would match up but I'll post some pics up later on.

As you can see the RIS on the left (black) is missing chunks of metal and it was only held on by friction.

Factory Aimpoint PRO mount compared to the Wilcox mount. As I said before, I replaced the Aimpoint unit for no better reason than OCD. The original mount in my opinion is superior to the Wilcox unit in that it worked fine, it had spacers for height if necessary and because the fastening knob had a build in torque setting that also facilitated removal.

My wife told me that something came in the mail today, hopefully it's the PRI Gasbuster charging handle. Now all I need is a real CQD sling plate and the KAC M4QD flash suppressor (among other less obvious parts). Will post more pics tonight of the build progression.

I had a bunch of CQD sling plates for sale in the EE and for some stupid reason took for ever to sell.

Thank you, just kick me in the balls while I'm down, lol!

I guess it's just catering to the clone-builder crowd as a lot of folks are going for the newer QD sling plates. '

Don't suppose you have any buried in your spare parts bin, or have a lead to get one anywhere in Canada?

This will probably be the last update for a while since I don't foresee myself shelling out $129 USD to replace a scope mount that works just fine, or $89 USD for the PRI Gas Buster charging handle to replace the Badger Ordinance tac latch on there now.

A few goodies did arrive in the mail though. A used LMT SOPMOD stock that's been in service for probably a bit too long, and an older M16A1 grip.

I'm not sure if the "C" mark inside the handle is an indication of Colt or not, but seems logical.

Compared to my "less distressed" LMT stock. Now you're probably wondering why the hell would I buy such a beat up stock? Well, since I started researching Mk18 Mod 0s, I've come to discover that some parts are a right pain in the #### to acquire. For instance, the KAC RAS will run damn near $200-300 USD complete for BNIB, $150 for used and rail only (no covers or grip). I haven't seen a KAC RIS system for ages.

Anyway, back to the LMT SOPMOD stock, the correct model for MK18 Mod 0 is the LMT gen 1, which does not have the QD socket for a sling swivel. I figured one with (gen 2) would be more desirable but apparently not. Another company, B5 systems was contracted to make the identical stock, but apparenly the trademark LMT on the stock will drive the value up. I already had an LMT gen 1 (bought it for what I thought was expensive a few years ago ($120 CAD) I yanked from my Colt Canada IUR, but I really liked running the LMT on the IUR so I wanted a second one. The only problem was, I wasn't ready to shell out $300 USD for a BNIB one. I haven't seen many used ones and though a B5 would do the job just fine, those too had gone up in price, almost double what they were last year.

I found this one off an army trucker who used it on his rifle when he was overseas. He's probably thinking he robbed me for the price I paid on this beat up old stock (25 bids on this thing before I finally took it) but I'm thinking I robbed him for what I ended up paying. Considering the inflated value on these things, I still ended up paying less than I did my first one, so I think I did okay.

I know that some folks are going for that "distressed look" by paining or cerakoting their rifles, then "weathering" them by scraping or scuffing up the finish, but this is not one of those. This one was once painted, but there are some serious wear marks in the plastic itself, not to mention some gouges and worn rubber buttpad that looks like it could have only happened over time.

Though my rail and covers have also seen better days, they are still more black than anything else so the stock as it is today doesn't really match. It's not a huge deal, I may just leave it, but if it starts to bug me, I think my buddy suggested I could remove the paint with.....brake cleaner or something?

Anyway, we'll see :)

A2 grip versus A1 grip.

You don't really need the A1 grip. That was used on regular M16 lowers when matched to the MK18 upper AFAIK if the MK18 upper was matched to an M4 upper the newer A2 grip was used

Sweet MK18, I gotta get the Wilcox mount too

Shouldn't it be pretty easy for you to get one since you have one foot on either side of the border? Haha! ITAR can be a collosal pain in the buttocks for the rest of us :)

Any pic of the whole rifle with the painted upper RAS?

Haha, yeah, I was going to post some, but then I thought if I got the PRI gasbuster when I got home after work, I'd have to take updated photos and bore everyone with pics of the same rifle again, only with a different charging handle. But since you asked......

With a fake corncob on there. It's an airsoft clone and only on there for photos. I'd never attempt to fire the rifle with it on, though there seems to be a ton of clearance. It actually does not mount properly to the standard A2 birdcage and needs that little notch found on the KAC flash hiders.

Oh, neat. That's some good info, thanks! I'm not sure exactly how hard or how easy it is to track down an A1 grip, but interesting thing is I like the feel of the A1 grip over the A2.

Love the mismatched look!

On my end of things in the clone world this stock showed up thanks to hilo:

First time trying a sopmod, i find it is heavy but balances well with the rifle and the cheek weld is as good as folks say it is
Was going to settle for the gen II but found a gen I yesterday so that fde one is going back up for sale.
