CQBR / Mk18 Mod1 Clone thread - Show us your clones!

I think this would be an issue if you were up near the limits of torquing down a nut to line up the gas tube hole. (standard barrel nut OR a free float tube) The spec is 30-80 ft lbs, but how many guys reduce the torque value 1/3 when they use anti seize or mil spec grease on the threads? That is more of an issue. For RIS II nuts, using grease/ paste just set the thing to 35 ft lbs and finished setting will be around 47 in actuality. You are still no where near 80 ft lbs even with using the wrench straight.

Instead of justifying doing it wrong, it is easier to simply use the tools correctly and know that it was done properly. Your point on using dry torque values with lubed threads is completely valid and falls into the same category of why not just do it right in the first place? Doing a half-assed job on something that can blow up in your face seems like a really bad idea to me when doing it properly takes no more effort.

I was going to reply, but hey... will have a beer instead.

If you are worried about the few LB addition in torque when using the DD barrel nut wrench head straight, just add it in to your settings. It's just math. My point was most guys do not use the 33% dry/ lubed thread value adjustment. Which obviously is more of a concern.
Back to my beer.

Adding the extra length on and recalculating the actual torque is also doing it right, IMO. More work than turning the crowfoot 90 degrees but certainly correct if the math is done correctly. I agree that using the incorrect torque values for dry/lubed threads is a bigger error, but the crowfoot one in not insignificant (it would be ~10% on my torque wrench), especially if added to the torque value error.

Enjoy the beer, I have some bourbon waiting for me this evening.

The error can add up pretty quickly yes, say a guy torques to 60 ft lbs, without the 1/3 value adjusted for. The torque is now 79.99 ft lbs. another 10% error with the wrench/ length is actually nearing 88-90.... with the +- range on the wrench as well.

On order:
-KAC M4QD FH
-KAC Taupe Front Sight
-KAC Ambi Safety (not 100% correct I know but I plan on using this for a few courses)

Looking for:
-FDE EOtech (EXPS3-0 or 533)
-CQD Front Sling Mount
-FDE B5/LMT
-Buffer Tube, Nut, End Plate

win...

get out of here scrub!...

seriously, though that is nice. slap an elcan on that, make it legit :p i wish it had those cool hk diopter sights some of the 416s had.

Funny you say that... I had a SpecterDR on it, and actually do have the HK diopter sights back on it now. But that's for another photo thread. Back to Mk18 photos! I've derailed this enough :)

I'm positive I've seen photos of tire1 door operators rocking 416s. This thread could always use a little more gun ####.
