Customized P-17's

Pardon my ignorance since I don't know a lot about p17 rifles. But why are so many customs built on a WWI action? Is it a good action with advantages over a modern action? After looking at all these I'm tempted to find a cheap bubba'd p17 myself and do something neat.

P14/M1917 actions are a fairly large action, and thus lend themselves well to conversion to large cartridges. This is one reason these actions are sometimes used in for dangerous game rifles.

I had the left side facing me and used the computer's camera...
Awkward, but functional; it saves having to rummage around the house in an ever increasing state of apoplexy searching for a camera.

iain53, that'll make a great donor.

Lots of metal will fly but not that big a deal. Just keep an eye on the drills you use for making the scope base holes. These actions have a pretty tough surface hardening.

Look forward to see what you come up with.

Geoff, that is beautiful wood! My wife's father used to turn wood a lot- he had an absolutely overwhelming stock of specialty wood in the basement when he died. There was just no way I could take any as I had no room in our townhouse for it; that is something I regret because the spalted maple he had was exquisite. It seems that when wood has a very rough life, it has real character.

Jerry we will talk sometime soon about an appropriate barrel. By the way, do you know of Tactical Ordnance? Casey lives in my general area and he is a very nice guy. He has the big equipment you need to mill & drill, so I will have no excuse but to build up a pretty piece!

Actually, a World War One action is considered a modern action, in regards to any metallergy concerns.
So what is the difference between it, and your version of a modern action?

Whoever did the metal work did an excellent job. I took it off the bubba'd original stock and dropped it into a real nice basic one....but haven't got around to final fitting, staining etc., etc.

I suppose I should've worded my question a bit better. I was meaning to ask what advantages a p17 action would have in a build over current actions like the Rem 700 and Savage 110.

Especially, if using a Savage or Stevens action...NONE.

That is why I stopped building rifles using these actions. The Savage offers so many more options like easy barrel swaps, center feed det mags, light triggers.

For the money and work involved, it was an easy choice.

Sorry to borrow the thread, but does anyone know if Ramline or another synthetic stock company makes a drop in synthetic stock for a Pattern 14/17 rifle?

Yeah, where the class in that, using a Savage? They are both ugly,I have them both. But Jeery nailed it. The only thing a P-17 has going for it is the start price.
