Cut Shotgun Shells

[Suther]

I miss Barry's video's with IV8888, ....
RIP Barry.

Agreed. RIP to Barry. The rest of the channel can get F'd though, bunch of good review selling swindlers if you ask me.

[One of their contracts was leaked like 10 years ago, and for enough money (and it was only like $4k iirc?) they would basically guarantee a good review as long as you kept supplying them with guns until they got one that worked reliably enough to film said positive review]

I am thinking the theory of "cut shells" must be to have front end of case go up the barrel - relying on the case wall, rather than the wad, to hold the birdshot together? I am sure it would fly like a "Solid", if the shotgun could take the firing - no clue what would happen when it hits, though - I have some #2 Buckshot 3" 20 gauge - if that is not enough, is myriad of various centre fire rifles, here. If I have to go out at night for black bear in yard here, is a 9.3x62 for that role.

That’s my understanding.

[Dave_D]

Do these shoot into space?

Yes, but only if you cut them correctly.

The real question is are they good for bear defence?

I feel like this may leave some plastic fouling. Think the dishwasher would be a good idea to clean the barrel after ?

Yes. That's the basic idea. The case separates where you cut it and the whole front of the shell travels as basically one piece for some amount of time.

It's generally not recommended for guns with chokes for obvious reasons.

Perhaps, I mean, we all know how effective a dishwasher can be, but as I recall that incident was only performed to remove cosmoline. Plastic fouling would likely remain intact, even through a stringent "Sani-rinse".

I haven't tried to shoot into space lately, and would still like an answer on its appropriateness for dispatching bear, but if plastic fouling ever becomes present, I mean, I'm reaching for the fix all. The most expensive product our supermarkets stock, or at least the product that has inexplicably jumped 400% in price lately and is still waxy sh1t to eat...BUTTER! {I'd recommend unsalted for the barrel}

Huh ! Thanks. Neat idea to make a poor mans slug if an emergency occured / survival.

[Coyote Ugly]

We need the high speed CGN camera and the Ballistic Jelly Belly dummy to show what happens in Slo Mo.

The bore is not the same diameter as the chamber. It is getting a bit of a wrinkle as it travels down the bore. Seems like it would give it an inconsistent flight through the air with a messed up wad.

[Jack Ryan]

Oh ! Yes I’m fully aware of slugs and it makes sense as if I have this correct and from what I have seen in videos cutting the shell keeps the load together

They don't cycle through a pump or auto shotgun from the magazine very well at all.

I've shot a lot these years ago when Indiana had a shot gun, slug only deer seasons. Of course these weren't legal for deer either but it sure killed them dead as a door nail. Kill a lot more coyotes with them than anything else. If you were carrying a slug and the warden check you during say turkey, squirrels, rabbit seasons when there was no deer season you had a LOT of questions to answer.

But you could cut one of those rabbit loads or a turkey load and take out a coyote at 50 yards or more with them. We shot them through every kind of junk you might find around an OLD farm testing them and they'll go right through an old car door.

I'd want to be sure to make a good shot with that first one because you are going to be loading those one at a time if you need another one.

[Jack Ryan]

Nope. The problem with a cut shell is penetration. It helps keep the load together longer but as soon as it hits something those pellets are spreading everywhere. They lack the cohesiveness of a slug, leading to shallow superficial wounds in comparison. They're fun, but it's a novelty item/SHTF fantasy - something to get more out of a birdshot shell if that's all you had, not a legit "better than factory slugs/buck" option.

I've seen them go right through both sides of an old car, both doors. I wouldn't want to bet my life on it but I would before I'd count on bird shot doing that.

That’s sad !

I would be curious about pressures. Seems to me that this would cause more pressure issues similar to shooting 3” in a 2 3/4 chamber. Pressure spikes when the shot charge is squeezed through the construction created by the hull opening into the forcing cone. With this, half the hull gets squeezed through the forcing cone.

I've made and fired "cut shells" a number of times just because I read about them in some homesteader type magazine back in the pre internet dark ages. So probably about 1990. And I have done it a few times since just for festive purposes. it's something fun to try but it's silly.

I guess if I was in a survival situation and all I had was a knife, a shotgun and some #6 shot shells and I wanted to kill a moose to survive I might consider using a cut shell. If you want shotgun slug performance the real solution is to just go buy some slugs. When I go grouse hunting I use a 20 gauge and carry extra ammo in a traditional old style belt with loops in it. On the right side of the belt I have 5 20g slugs, so it's easy and intuitive for me to grab with my right hand. The rest is #6 shot.

I started carrying the slugs because many years ago I was out in early season with my girlfriend walking down a nice trail and shooting grouse. On the way back up the trail we ran into one of the biggest black bears I have ever seen. Bears will spook easy and run off but the big ones don't go far, as they quickly remember they are the king of the hill. Anyway this bear spooked then got pissed off at us and paralleled us through the bush while we walked the trail. He was acting aggressive and I knew that if he got real uppity and charged my only chance with the #6 was to basically wait until last minute then shoot him in the face. Fortunately nothing happened but then I put some slugs in the loops.

So yeah...cut shells? Try them out and have some fun if you like but if you want a slug just go buy a box of slugs!

[Jack Ryan]

If you shoot those cut shells and one "just didn't seem right" DO NOT SHOOT ANY THING ELSE UNTIL YOU'LL LOOK DOWN THAT BARREL AND SEE IT IS CLEAR ALL THE WAY THROUGH.

DO NOT USE RELOADS FOR THIS. They will leave the outer ring of the hull stuck in the barrel almost every time and you'll THINK well that was just a shot shell.

In all seriousness, this is a good PSA.

If you're going to use this type of shell, do not attempt to cycle in a pump or auto shotgun. Break actions, or one at a time in a pump or auto, manually fed through the ejection port.

Slamming another cut shell load into an obstructed barrel will equate to a ruined barrel or worse, a kaboom.

[bearhunter]

It would be interesting to try them out with an overbore shotgun and extended forcing cone.

They work well in my SXS Husqvarna without a chamber lip, where the forcing cone was opened up to remove the lip.

Cylinder bore and Improved choke

[bearhunter]

They do, they are called slugs or roundballs.

From what I've seen, they do not penetrate as well as a sug or round ball, they react similarly to a "Glazer Safety Slug," which was loaded by Federal into .410 cases.

Glazer slugs first came out in pistols. They utilize flat lead composite shot platelets that slide apart and spread on impact, so they expend all of their energy inside the target, but don't exit.

They work very well, but are no longer available, unless you cast your own platelets and handload.

The videos show #8 bird shot being used, because it will "compress" without ruining a barrel.

I've only shot a couple of dozen from my shotgun because I've been worried about the case "sleeve" being left behind. I've never seen it happen, butttttttttt?????

[remington jim]

Hers a video showing a comparison on a non cut shell and a cut one
I just love the shotgun he’s using !

you better cut some and try them out in your shotty - Need some water jugs behind to seee if you can get any penetration and how much ?
