Dangerous game short range match. The challenge is on!

good comments. I find the time to kneel one interesting as when faced with the siutation I knelt on reflex bringing my body to the rifle. No thought just happened and no there was no "looking" for a place to kneel. From the trail carry position the rifle can come up or the body can go down just about the same distance. To say things happen fast in the last 20 yds is an understatement!
I do agree very much with the size mattering and big is better idea. Something to consider especially in the I hope I don't have to shoot stage.
i guess the bottom line is each situation has too many variables to assign one best shooting position. Thanks for the comments

Practice lots (of positions) and stay safe kids.

Here's my first attempt with my Marlin 1895GS 45-70 with my top loaded 405gr RNFPGC Bullet Barn cast bullets @ 1950fps.

I can only time the shots by watching the timer on the video clip but it looks like 3 seconds for the 3 shots in both of the video clips. The first attempt resulted in a 4 1/2" 25 yard group and the second attempt was a 4 3/4" 25 yard group.

Here's a link to the photo of me with both targets taken by fellow CGNTZ Unibomber he signed the targets after he took the picture. The first group is in my left hand and if I measured all 6 shots combined they measure about 5 1/4"... :D

All groups where measured from outside to outside of the widest shots.

Wow: I'm impressed. Yesterday morning I shot a 4.5" group in 6.71 seconds with my 870 Marine Magnum; given that I have ghostring sights on it I'm not pleased with the accuracy, and even though I was firing 1600 fps 1-oz Winchester hollowpoint slugs I'm not happy with the speed, either.

On the other hand, it was -20 and windy out. Think I'm gonna try again next weekend.

I went out on Saturday, -27 and windy, my shooting was quick enough, but with both rifle and shotgun I had fliers. What I did was fire 4 shots, that way the clock can start running on the first shot and stop on the 4th, so 3 shots are timed. Now I've got some camera problems, and the video is coming up in square blocks on the computer screen.
 
I went out for another go at Camp Cooks best time to date of 2.85 seconds.

My previous best effort from a couple of weeks ago was:

1895GS, 4.52 seconds, 1 7/8" Score (Group size x time): 8.48

My best two strings today were:

1895GS, 4.40 seconds, 2.0" Score (Group size x time): 8.80

So I was able to speed up my time by a little over half a second but the group size almost doubled. IMHO it would be better for me to go with the faster rate of fire as the effective difference between a 1.8" group versus a 3.65" group is insignificant in this application.

But I'll tell ya it's going to take a lot of practice to shave off more than a second to match 2.85 seconds. :eek:
 
I finally got out again with my buddy to shoot :) I couldn't talk him into trying the match as he is still new to his 45/70 and doesn't shoot much.
First off I got to try his Marlin 45/70 XCR, I love the gun (except that long barrel has to go) but sucked badly for the time and group was just over two inches. With practice and a slightly shortened stock and barrel I could get to like that gun.

Next I brought out the trusted 870, 20" rifle sight barrel and Federal 2 3/4" slugs. I am very comfortable with the 870 and did three runs. I was a little longer getting on target than I wanted, the first wasn't anything to brag about. The second run was 2.81seconds with a group size of 1.61" for score of 4.5 The last run was 2.87 seconds from the buzzer and group size was 1.40" for a score of 3.93 All my runs were from the buzzer so that includes my reaction time to it.
I am going to get out again and try for better time, take the video camera and test out my Spec-ops stock and short barrels. :D

PLease get some video because I'm sure we'd love to see your technique plus the beautiful scenery where you live.

I am thinking of putting a Specops onto my new Norinco 14" 870 clone if it proves to be reliable in feed and extraction.
 
Geoligist, I think we need a new rule, no sissy pads allowed :p :D JK

Where is the 375 with some bruiser loads, or did I miss it? I just finished my loads for my 375, 270g and 300g Barnes Triple shock. Just a bit more accuracy testing and I should have it figured out very soon. Back and forth, back and forth, it never ends :D

I think that's a polite way of saying "I call BS?!" ;) It is indeed real, I shoot the shotgun a lot and am good with it; this was with the regular wood stocks, no real technique except that recoil doesn't bother me at all and I get fast shot recovery. I will get out and video tape it as soon as I can, and also with a comparison of the Knoxx and regular stock.

I am not calling BS on your time or score. This is an honour match. I just want to learn from others with better technique so that I can improve myself. :D Things like are you ejecting the hull on recoil, what stance are you using, how much are you leaning into the 870 etc.

I have no problem believing that a guy who lives in BIG bear country like you do, would be a speed demon with an 870!

If I am in country when you are down in March I'd love to get a bunch of us together for a hand cannon match at Mission or Ridgedale.

Hey Geo I was just joshing :) I knew you didn't mean anything like that at all. I was actually surprised my the group myself. If we can swing a get together in Abby that would be great, I used to get there a lot and still pop in occasionally.

It's good to see Cam get nocked off his perch, maybe his hat size will return to normal now, We used to hunt together all the time and it was always a race to get off a shot before he did.
But I don't feel bad according to his wife he does everything fast:p :D
even a cowboy tries to hold on for 8 seconds :dancingbanana:
