I had an incident a long time ago that made me dislike detachables. On day one of a four day pack-in hunt, my friend lost the magazine from his Enfield sporter. Took a lot of the fun out of it for him, especially when he missed the first shot at a nice little mowitch a day later.

Then again, I grew up in bush that seeing twenty feet away is good, and things are always grabbing at you.

May be a different story on flat, grassy ground.

The other incident that made me pay close attention to the catch on my magazine, was when I slid down a thirty foot rotten log into a big patch of devils club. I only found two of five rounds.

DGR guys have it right...blind magazine, or EXTREMELY solid catch on the floorplate, IMHO. For a serious hunting rifle ;)

Two dogs, I'm not saying that I haven't shot a few critters while driving down a logging road on my way to stake out a clear cut, lol! Most of them have been been on stand though, but I always have the bolt back and a couple of cartridges ready to go when I'm driving just in case...:)
By the way, I googled mowitch and it's the salish indian word for deer...:)

i have to say estheticaly, i like my savage rifle with blind mag but i don't like that you have to cycle the bolt to unload it 1 round at a time.

So you're comparing all detachable box magazine rifles to an Enfield? Times have changed and technology has progressed. As an example, look at a newer Remington 700. It has a very secure latching system that requires the user to depress a release button on each side of the magazine simultaneously before it will detach. It also sounds like your Enfield wielding friend needs to be better prepared, such as bringing at least one extra magazine.

Mag still on the outside off the action, bolt open, the mag is attached to the floorplate, which is open, is it elligal, probably, so is driving a vehicle while hunting without your seatbelts on. cheers!

Yes, I emphasize in this province because some relevant people here have told me they'd consider the gun loaded because the full magazine is connected to the open floor plate. It'll depend on what those people in your province think, but I wouldn't care to go to court to find out, so my detached magazine is in my pocket while driving, so I'm safe from that infraction. I don't mind you taking your chances there, you aren't hurting me. :)

I am not a fudd by any means, but like a lively conversation. I haven't seen this in a thread, and would like to know why so many people feel like they need a detachable magazine on their hunting rifle. I personally prefer a blind magazine, or a nice floor plate at most (I have owned DM's and if I like the rifle and the DM setup it wouldn't bother me), but some seem to think that a rifle without a DM is like a hockey player without a puck.

I don't like DM's for the following reasons:
-Most are unsightly
-Most rattle or make some noise
-Many reduce the capacity
-Many (IMO) poor latching systems
-I just don't see the need for a "quick" load or reload

So why not, or why so?

I agree with allof the above!

Yes, its a 284 win in a micro medallion, and I'll bet you would like one, I also have one chambered in a browning a-bolt hunter.

I had one as well, and hated the mag system, but loved the rifle. I sold it when I couldn't get it to shoot the bullets I wanted it too. To this date the only A-Bolt I have owned.

Oh, and I added a poll. Its simple so it should confuse the DM fanboys
The first vote was mine, and I voted for the "Not a fan..." option.

I also want to reply to the guy that said that the DM's are more likely to add ammo reserves to the rifle package by using the Lee Enfield and Tikka magazines as an example. And I retort: like I said "UGLY". Functional but "UGLY".

UGLY. ;)

I know what you mean, Longer bullets have to be seated overly deep to fit the mag, hornady 139 gr bt sp work well, as do sierra 140-150 gr. Mine doesnt like premium bullets, even when loaded out longer and fed into the chamber individually it still doesnt group tight.

I bet you're just as picky about whether your dress matches your purse. :p :D

Faster to load when you're getting out of the truck.
This. You NEVER know when you're going to be driving back to camp after a morning hunt and BAM, you run across a moose just crossing the road. We've taken a few moose this way, and having the quick-load ability of a detachable mag (as well as practice inserting it quickly under stress!) definitely contributed to getting the kill. A few extra seconds futzing with internal mags or what have you can be the difference between a clean kill or letting it walk because you can't shoot at anything except its ass! :D

Thats an argument that holds no water. I have personally, along with many others, done just fine dropping a round in and taken advantage of those opportunities without the magazine. Never once have I (nor have I heard anyone) said " oh man, if only I had a magazine I would have dropped that ____!"

Muscle memory is muscle memory, and being able to operate or shoot under stress isn't dependent on a magazine.

None of the options were applicable. I have some applications where I don't care whether it has a dm or not, and others where I prefer a DM. So, it is a feature I care for, but not on all rifles.
