I had an incident a long time ago that made me dislike detachables. On day one of a four day pack-in hunt, my friend lost the magazine from his Enfield sporter. Took a lot of the fun out of it for him, especially when he missed the first shot at a nice little mowitch a day later.
Then again, I grew up in bush that seeing twenty feet away is good, and things are always grabbing at you.
May be a different story on flat, grassy ground.
The other incident that made me pay close attention to the catch on my magazine, was when I slid down a thirty foot rotten log into a big patch of devils club. I only found two of five rounds.
DGR guys have it right...blind magazine, or EXTREMELY solid catch on the floorplate, IMHO. For a serious hunting rifle
