Do the Canadian Forces need a new pistol

The Browning is still a good pistol but the mags are crap. In Afghanistan I stopped carrying it and just left it locked in my barrack box in camp. It was just weight at that point since all my mags were dented and wouldn't work in the pistol.

Why not dig up the drawings from the Inglis pistol from the National Archives, ship them to Diameco/Colt Canada and ask them to have their engineers take a look at it and come up with a "modern" version of it ? I don't see the point of going half-assed by buying foreign equipment when we can come up with something home-grown that suits our needs ....

i recently heard that reg force MPs are getting P226s in the near future due to the higher mag capacity, then again theres alot of wishful thinking going around.

Not so much due to mag capacity, more because the CF can not get anymore new P225.

If mag capacity had been a factor, we would have went with the P226 from the get go.

...and the contract can be awarded to a Quebec company. JUST BUY THE GLOCK 19 OR MP COMPACT AND GET IT OVER WITH.

I think Hoddie makes a good point about first shot double action for the average soldier. IMO we're splitting hairs comparing Sig/Browning/1911/Glock/CZ ect., they're all good relatively speaking and I wouldn't feel undergunned with any of them. The BHP has served well and long, it just may not be the most ideal relative to what's out there. I'd rather the guns had ammo to train will and other equipment they need. That said my choice would be all steel, something like the CZ75.

I would go with glock but since we have SIG parts and guns in the system, so I would say SIG.

P.S steel rusts its heavy and its Fing cold in -20 weather and Fing hot in +40 weather. Plastic or alloy is the future "sorry old guys" lol

The 225 has not been made for quite some time, I would expect that Sig would try to steer the CF into buying the 250 as a major buy from a military would help marketing, however the CF may do small buys of 226 to avoid going down the route of a large contract and all that requires.

Do the Canadian Forces, especially the Army need a newer pistol??

Never mind pistols, they need new everything. Apart from Luxembourg, Canada still spends less than any other NATO member on its military. The NATO average is 2.5% of GDP, we spend just over 1%. By comparison Portugal, on a GDP basis, spends more on its military than we do.

I carried the Hi-Power while on tour in Bosnia and loved it. The SOP back then was hammer down on an empty chamber, but I felt confident enough in my drills that carrying it cocked and locked would not have been an issue.

There have been lots of good discussion and tonnes of good ideas. Having said that, there are a couple of issues that won't change in the near future.

1. 9mm is the NATO standard (despite what the US is trying to do), so anything not in 9mm will not fly.

2. The Hi-Power works just fine. If you take care of your mags and ensure the feed lip measurements are within tolerance (any wpns tech can check for you) you will have no trouble with it. Let's take the new ones out of storage and issue them.

3. Single action with a safety or double action with a decocker. Whatever a soldier uses, he should get enough ammo and training to ensue he can manipulate the pistol correctly and has the confidence to carry it cocked and locked.

4. Money needs to be spent in other places first. Yes we could use a different sight on the C7/C8. There are tonnes of opinions on whether or not we need it or not so I won't go into it here. The LAV III is a great piece of kit but we are running out of them. Lets put some serious money into getting more LAV's.

Glock 17...simple, and it shoots everytime....the hi-power feels nice in your hands but until they sort on the mags on that it will always be more reliable to throw it at the enemy than to fire it at him.

listen I just retired from the military this month , and I have been on a few tours . The browning high power is a great sidearm , and is combat proven . And as far as the 9 mm goes it is for close combat , thats about it . In all my years of service I have never seen a officer or s/nco pull a pistol , other than on the range . C7 , C8 ,C9 are what most people use as main battle weapons . Just remember this JOHN MOSSES BROWNING IS A GOD B] thanks Joe

I retired from the military as well. If in all your years of service you have never seen an officer or s/nco (in todays army, soldiers other than officers or s/nco's carry pistols) pull a pistol other than on the range that says volumes, you must have been retired for a while.... A pistol was never meant as a main battle wpn, it is an oh #### wpn when your primary wpn fails. A flintlock is combat proven as well, the Browning HP was good in it's day but there is better out there now and just as combat proven.

It is embarrassing and idiotic to put people in harms way and not offer them top of the line equipment . There is nothing more final than what could happen in a military zone , they should have equipment of there choice , not what would just barely get by .

Now if the CF brass would just realize this. The police brass have and the equipment for the cops on the front line have improved significantly over the years.:)
