Do you really need a magnum

I have just one now. Never did own a lot. A few 7mags and 375s.

Don't really need them here. Getting older = getting fewer.

I took my 7x57 to NFLD in 2020. I could see a use for a magnum for shooting over those big bogs.

you had or created the best rifle as a magnum without being one: the 375 taylor and you used it in the yukon best place for it. 375 and 366 shine here.

It was always my understanding that the big bores in the Yukon were more for the bears than for moose. I remember seeing 458Win Mag in CDN Tire there.

How many people on here don't own at least 1 magnum rifle?

Had a BAR in 7mm mag.

Took it on trade, never even sighted it in before I traded it away.

Had it been a .308 I would probably still have it, as it was a beautiful rifle.

That was 40 years ago.

No, I have nothing against magnums in shotgun, pistol, or rifle.

I've owned a number of Magnums over the years . My two favourites are the 7mmRM and the 257 WM , followed closely by the 375 H&H . Currently , I don't own any . I can't say I feel disadvantaged in any way . I hunt in different places now , long shots are rare . My 30/06 , 358W or 45/70 cover everything I do lately . YMMV .

I've recently developed an urge to possess a BAR in 308 . My Dad had a Grade 2 308 back in the 1970s , a very nice , and accurate rifle . You don't see them that often .

If my Wife gets wind of this thread I might not own any either, I have Her convinced that on our annual hunting trip, a visit from a Jurassic type creature is possible. I now have to start a story with Her about how a new generation of Hunters is having trouble with more than 6.5 creedmoor recoil and how She married a real man [she will be skeptical]. I am finally getting closer to my 416 rem mag project [She wasted the fun money on a set of Royal Albert china a couple of months ago] so please just stop, go ruin someone else's fun. If the feds hear this we could see the next gun ban for anything with more that ten foot pounds of recoil.

Is the title magnum even used much in naming cartridges these days? The WSM/RSAU
/RUM may be one of the last lines of cartridges called magnums?

The 375 Ruger, 300 PRC, 30 Nosler etc are magnum sized but not magnum in name. :)

None here.

Hint: The moderators are unlikely to punish you for finally admitting your long-held family secret: No Big Wump in the safe.

I got my first ever six years ago. A purpose-designed rifle for target work at extended long range that has paid for itself many times over. But this is a hunting thread and, yes, I might want to move up from a .35 Whelen to a magnum if I expect moose at longer ranges, or bruins of the brown or white variety.

Vanguard in 257 Weatherby Magnum
Remington 700 in 7mm Remington Magnum
Remington Custom 700 in 308 Norma Magnum
Ruger #1B in 308 Norma Magnum
Winchester M70 in 325 WSM
Remington 700 Custom in 8mm Remington Magnum.

Oh yes, an Anschutz 1522 in 22 Rimfire Magnum, lol
Dave.
