Handgun Hunting; If you could, what would you use?

tired and true 1911 government, 45acp and with that pistol i'd love to hunt wild boar ;)
would be a rush and a half :D
Not to rain on your parade, but if you've ever read any of the older Guns&Ammo articles, 45 ACP out of a 1911 is a poor choice for feral pig or wild boar. Seems thier practical recommendations start at 357 or a heavily stoked 44 Special.
The solid performers were 45 Win Mag, 41 Magnum with cast, 45 LC heavy handloads, and of course 44 Rem Mag.(but we all know this already)

Apparently we don't, Brutus.

To all the pistol-packin' Pete's out there: while perfectly suitable for killing your fellow humans, the semi-auto cartridges (9, 40, 45, etc.) are not suitable and completely inappropriate for the killing of big game animals (dispatch of trapped animals is a different discussion).

Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, the smallest whitetail deer is 10 times tougher to kill then the biggest, baddest Hell's Angel. Many human's die from marginal bullet (and other) wounds - it's called shock.

My 686 would go with me for a deer hunt. I have shot it enough to feel confident out to 60 yards. For small game, my S&W M48 would be my companion. Eagleye.

Anyone want to post pictures of what they'd use, if we could?

If I was still hunting & handgun hunting was allowed, I'd use:

GSG 1911 .22lr for small game:

S&W Model 57 6" .41 Magnum [with MD Charlton distiguished tune] for larger game:

NAA.

I carried my 8 3/8" mod 29 for deer in northern Maine some 30 yrs ago. I didn't get a deer but the Speer shotcaps worked on grouse. I might yet do the trip again before I get old.

For general carry, eastern woods, a 6" mod 19

Small game, 6" mod 17

And, I would love to be able to pack my 50 cal Mountain pistol in the muzzle loading season. Come to think of it, a political push to allow the relatively innocuous ml pistols just might be a foot in the door.
