I'd take a VZ over an AK any day. The only reason I'd ever pick an AK over a VZ is if I were in the US and needed readily available mags and parts.
But if I were choosing between AKs and VZs in a vaccuum, I'd take the VZ without thinking twice. AKs are heavier, possibly less accurate although good enough for government work as the saying goes, the ergos suck and I hate the safety and the lack of a bolt hold open. Stovepipes are virtually impossible on a VZ and clearance drills are almost pointless. If you get a ####ed AK mag and it pukes rounds, double and triple feeds can get really nasty. FTEs can be really ugly in an AK as well and AK reliability is sufficiently overstated/mythological that people don't realize...these things happen on AKs as well and they SUCK to fix.
A VZ with a Neit/NEA bolt release can be reloaded at nearly AR speed and is as reliable as any AK I have ever encountered. They are similarly overgassed on extraction and the ejection port is half the receiver. What does a double feed on a VZ even look like? You fix it by tilting the gun. When I ran one in the Hackathorn course I couldn't get mine to malfunction even by putting fired cases that I pulled off the muddy ground in the mag along with actual rounds. They still fed fine and the only malf drill I got to do was "rack".
Damn right I'd take a VZ.
