Hornady Introduces Yet Another New 300 Magnum Cartridge

there's a growing market of heavy 30cal stuff

Hornady 225ELD
Sierra 230 & 240gr SMK
Berger 230gr Hybrid

If manufacturers put a 9 twist on the PRC, it opens the doors to even heavier offerings. The 300RUM has a following with LR hunters, this PRC will open doors to standard length actions and AICS magazines, cheaper brass and it will be easier to tune than the RUM...and longer barrel life and less recoil

It is also shorter then a 300 win mag. So more room for those torpedoes. It is designed for none of the bullet to sit in the powder column as well cant say the same with a 300 win mag.

One would think that the manufacturer will keep the price in check getting it off the ground,,, which is a good thing for the consumer,,, but over time the costs would most likely rise once folks get addicted to the kool-aid,,, nothing wrong with this idea as each shooter gets to choose their irons.

The cost don't affect the folks that can afford stuff like this, but the average shooter "now days" are more into general plinking and hunting.

This is not saying that some folks like owning 1 or 2 units well others have more than the normal amount of folks out there,,, again,,, it depends on lots of factors per person.

Young and lots of money, then why not,,, middle age and a conscious buyer might tap it kool in their spendings,,, the older crowd that are into hunting and shooting sports are most likely set-up with what they have.

Marketing of this new cartrages will move it forward, but the new Waldoo 300 Supreme Super Ultra Express Excalibur will put it to rest when it comes to market.

250gr of powder pushing a 230gr chunk of play-doe at 4700 ft-per seconds. LOL.

Yuppers, every manufactor tries to trump the next.

Oh well, at least innovation is alive and well in the firearms world,,, it won't be long before the 300 Creedmoor sees it's release as it will take sales away from all the competition in the 30 caliber market like the 6.5 is attempting to do right now. LOL.

The next big thing becomes the next small thing as humans enjoy all kinds of flavours.

I can see my self returning to the simple out dated 303 Brit, 308 Win, 30/06, 300 Win Mag, 300 H&H since they offer nothing more with nothing less.

But that's just me as my CDO prevents me from stepping out of line. Ha.

Folks normally call it OCD, but this is in correct since the letters don't line up in order. LOL

I have a 300 WM Savage. If I got a 1:7 twist barrel for it in 300 PRC it might be worth switching. I'd pretty much get 338 Lapua ballistics without such a heavy bullet and a bigger action. The 225gr .308" ELD-M has a G7 BC of .402 compared to the 285gr .338" at .417. (0.798 vs 0.829 in G1 numbers). I guess the same could be said for a 1:7 twist 300 WM but the PRC has a slightly better case design.

It's an incremental improvement and most hunters and target shooters would see zero benefit from it. However, there are people building 30-375 Rugers so there must be a market for it.

Make it a 35 or 40 and id be interested. I have a 300 savage a 308 and two 300wm. One win mag may get sold to fund a 3006 but im all for new cartridges.
Its kinda weird but im more into larger diameter bore and smaller cased varmint cartridges now. I dont really have a need for anything above 25 and below 35 but im not giving them up

.
I wonder how long this one is going to stick around until it fades out into obscurity. How many of these new cartridges have we seen practically disappear?

Maybe this is why Hornady excludes 30 Nosler load data in their reloading manual. ..don't want to acknowledge the competition. ...lol

If I wanted a belt-less 30 cal Mag, I'd do the 30/06 AI /Sherman.

Punched out AI case with Reimed out throat to seat the bullets long like the Sherman.

Quick, easy, fast, but why go this route when I can buy a 300 Win Mag with a belt.

Yuppers, another rifle to add to the lists of "For Sale." Ha

New sells for a short while .....then in a few years when the realization sinks in it’s nothing special they are discontinued and finding ammo becomes hard, then it becomes a handloaders only game for another failed cartridge.

OR a rebarrel.

Interesting that we are seeing such a burst of activity.

1925 - .300 H&H
1944 - .300 Wby
1960 - .308 Norma Mag
1963 - .300 Win Mag

1996 - .30/378 Wby
1999 - .300 RUM
2001 - .300 RSAUM, .300 WSM
2007 - .300 RCM
2012 - .300 Norma Mag
2016 - .30 Nosler
2018 - .300 PRC

So since 1996 we are seeing a new .30 caliber magnum cartridge every 2.75 years. Up until 1996 we saw 4 factory chamberings in 71 years, or 1 for every 17.75 years.

Another interesting bit of information:

.300 Wby with 200gr Partition and Nosler brass has case capacity of 87.6gr of H20
.30 Nosler with 200gr Partition and Nosler brass has case capacity of 87.5gr of H20

But the Nosler, according to Nosler's data, uses a few grains less powder to achieve the same velocity.

Got my first 300 win mag late last year but am not wild about the belt and the short neck. Even 300wm ammo is difficult to source where I live so we can forget about anything more exotic. So far my 300wm is surprising me with great accuracy and I dropped a Spike at 714m last Sunday with her.
I would love to see a non belt longer neck 30 mag getting popular but don't really think it will happen soon.

Why? Have you experienced any problems due to the neck or belt? I get the theory behind it but I have never had any problems due to short neck or belt.

Not really, as I said I am very surprised about the accuracy and had expected her to be more finicky. Would have preferred a longer neck mainly because one is led to believe it helps accuracy.... filling the AI mag one notices the belt but it also didn't prove a problem shooting the rifle.. The more I shoot the 300wm the more I like it. Took 4 deer with her in the last weeks.
