my sks have a scope & open sight'
can one shoot both classes?

If you can use both sights at the same time, we can probably cover your optics lens with duct tape when you shoot the iron sight heat.

Remove the tape when you shoot the optics heat. Physically removing the scope may affect your "zero" so not advisable to do that.

Just got back from "zeroing" my irons at 200yds. Was actually able to hit somewhere on the target paper more than once, pretty exciting.

darn. i'm going to be at the Poco range tomorrow evening, but have not shot my SKS at 200m yet. also put the dragunov stock on, so i'm gonna be all over the place... looking forward to meeting some of you guys there...

Do we have to use surplus ammo or can we use handloads?

Good question. None of us thought about the possible use of handloads.

In the first shoot, everybody used surplus ammo.

Match Director Satain can decide on this.

Mp5k, can you use, and do you have, surplus ammo? In case reloads are not allowed, I suggest you should be able to shoot surplus ammo.

The idea of the gong shoot was to have fun with the stock SKS and I assume that meant standard military ammo as well.

In the first shoot, one scoped rifle was allowed to shoot and it was apparent that it had a definite advantage. So this time, scopes will have its own class. Reloaded ammo may give the same advantage over surplus.

POCO is open today.

Tip on sighting in:
At 100 meters, set your rear sight at the "1" position and zero your sights for a 6 o'clock hold, with your hits centered about 4 - 5 inches high.

To shoot 200 meters, just set the rear sight to "2" position and using the same 6 o'clock hold, most of your shots should land inside the 10" x 10" gong.

In theory, at least, that's how it works:) For the first gong shoot, I zeroed my 56 Tula this way. During practice, 5 out of 5 went into a 10 x 10 white target. During the shoot, with the pressure and excitement, and on the less visible grey steel gong, only 8 of 20 hit.

I would be happier if it was milsurp ammo only. It seems to defeat the purpose of an iron-sights, $200 surplus rifle shootout if people are using carefully tested handloads or expensive off the shelf stuff imo.

Either way, I'll be using ammo from my 1960's czech military worker friends.

I think we should only use factory loads. Weather be surplus or commercial, as a just incase for safety sake. Some times primer pop's can't be heard in the heat of the moment.

Actually the czech stuff has given me some of the best grouping's I have got from my 2 sks. Also if this weather continues for tomorrow we won't even have to worry about using water to clean our rifles. We can just leave them out side for a good couple of minutes.
;)

Who doesnt have cases of czech ammo?! I get good groups with czech ammo too, But i just got some Vmax bullets & was going to start loading, maybe next match we can have that catagory..

Just loaded up the range bag! I think I might go out a little early and whittle down my crate a bit. If anybody is there early and sees someone with a digicamo range bag and an SKS with no bayo, come say hi :)

Sad to say I can't make this match as I'm on night shift. But next time for sure. Hey easy, how about a picture of the gongs I'd like to see how they're holding up. I have a gong waiting in the wings that is a full 1" and 3/8" thick X 10" and I'm hoping you will lug it around like last time LOL Have fun and good job on the prize!!!

Thanks a ton to the organizers, sponsors, etc. I had a great time and by the smiles I saw everybody wearing I think everybody else did too. Also nice to meet satain, rottboy, elmerfudd and the rest of you guys.

Pretty cool of Lever to donate $180 worth of stuff for a prize. We should make sure to shop there :)
