Now the question is... What do I do with the muzzle? I could leave it as is or should I thread it for a brake. The brake would be mostly for aesthetics. Not sure if I could make a brake as I don't have a lathe or mill (diy cool factor would be neat). Kinda liking the Wittmachine ones. Any thoughts on a similar style one (maybe less expensive?) I'm cheap.

Hey
I'm also cheap and ordered a die from china on ebay and a simple bird cage brake (think its called that)
once it gets here I'm cutting down the barrel alittle and threading...
take a look on ebay for sks brakes..you might like one or two
Glenn.

Brakes really tame the muzzle jump on SKS's, but are LOUD, the AK 74 brake i bought from Hical.ca is VERY LOUD. plus if your running corrosive, thats just one more part you have to clean.

I agree, they certainly help a lot but I don't find the brakes I have been using to increase the sound. I have not tested it, I am just commenting on the perceived sound and I do not have a shortened barrel. I do notice when other shooters come to the range with rifles that have shorter barrels with a brake and are shooting at the bench under the roof, they are very loud. I'm not sure what the sound increase would be with a shortened barrel but I would almost be certain that it increases it significantly. I love the look of those AK 74 brakes, they keep it more Russian looking and they do exactly what I bought for!

Corrosion adds character ;)

For me, the biggest hurdle was getting the front sight off. The pins came very easy. The sight, not so much. I used a very heavy duty gear puller and party of a flaring tool to get it to move and it wouldn't budge. I had to heat it to get it to come apart. By the time I was done it looked like a beaver with carbide teeth attacked it. I probably should have cut a little shorter, but this gives me a chance to get the crown just right. I have a couple of options to try. I'll be sure to post a pic when I'm happy with that.

@tacticalsks: Lots of folks have noted a slight accuracy gain (reduced barrel whip?). It does change the balance because there's less weight on the front and there's the aesthetic portion.

Better balance, and a little more accurate ( maybe because of the better crown job), Mine shoots very well @ 18.6, with a new crown.

I wonder... Improvement wise, is it the redone crown or the shorter barrel that's making the improvement? Either way it works for me! Going to have to watch out for another SKS though. Gotta have one that I left alone!
