I have an ich for a new Bang stick

Like it was said earlier the axis that you have in 30-06 is plenty adequate and it is very light weight for pushing moose. You did not mention what optic that you have on the rifle but if it is the package scope then maybe upgrading the glass to a nice low magnification 2-7 X 33 VX2 / redfield revolution / Zeiss Terra etc. might be a better choice...

I had the same rifle and used it to push alot of bush when I first started getting into hunting. What I did last year is that I sold it and upgraded to a better rifle in the same calibre.

You could always sell the axis and look into something like a CZ, Win model 70, Tikka/sako, Weatherby...

My axis has a bushnell 3x9x40 trophy taker....i think thats it. It does a great job. and yeah its great for luging around, but im looking for somethign alittle shorter in a caliber suficiant for 1 to 200yrd shot, in the buch with iron sight. I want it shorter so i can place it on the front of the quad and keep it between the tires, instead of in the gun boot. and movign around with my axis in the boot makes me cringe about the sight keeping zero.

As for caliber, not looking for the wide variety and all, im looking at a up to putting down a moose caliber! my 30-06 will do all the other animals np. The shorter rifle would be for bush and up to tree line shots.

I know the best answer for my pocket would be stick with what i have and done deal. But if you were me and wanted a new B..g stick, and had a few bucks burning up, what would you get.

If you are so concerned with your Axis loosing zero, I would spend the money on a better scope not a new rifle.

How much shorter than your axis do you need to be for to fit between the front tires? The axis isn't particularly long, it has a pretty standard length of pull (13 3/4" I think?) and a 22" barrel, so unless you only need 2 inches, you might find your options pretty limited especially if you dont want something with a shorter length of pull.

Marlin Guide Gun is only 37", which is like 5.5" shorter than your axis. Most other options are in the 40ish inch range which only gets you 2.5" of length reduced.

Suther,..I'm not sure what your problem is....in my books you are just being argumentative.

I have an itch for proper spelling and terminology.

Argumentative? Sure thing. You going around talking about lever-actuated bolt-action rifles is akin to antis calling a semi-auto AR15 a machine gun. Get your terminology right if you wanna be part of an intelligent discussion, otherwise you just look like a fool.

Wow.... Cranky..... It's just the Internet..... Is your bang stick itchy

Ha ha,...wow,..you're quite the warrior Suther,...here is a "suggestion" for you,.."Anger Management".

Anyway,.. I am done banging my head against the wall with you on this one.......but I do have one more question for you Suther,...when you go to the bathroom to pee...do you stand in front of the toilet or do you sit on it?,...the reason I ask this is because the only other time I get these kind of outlashing remarks is when I am in an argument with my wife.

To the OP Troy1760,...my apologies for taking part in disrupting this otherwise enjoyable thread. You have been given some good advice/suggestions by other posters,..good luck and have fun choosing a new rifle.

Oh the OP can call his gun whatever he wants. The misspelling on itch was sure bugging me though!

Where I really get annoyed is where people make stuff up to push their agenda - like implying the BLR is better because its a lever actuated bolt action, when such a term is at odds with itself and logically doesn't make sense.

Says hes done, then goes on to write a paragraph that contains nothing more than pathetic ###ism. And throws his wife under the bus to do it no less. Classic. You sir win at the internetz.

As far as Caliber choice goes, if you go with the guide gun, you get the 45-70 with it. With the 325gr LeverEvolution ammo from Hornady, sighted in at 3" high at 100yd its only 4.1 inches low at 200 yards. Considering the size of a Moose's vitals, you dont have to think about hold over or anything until past 200 yards at the least.

If you choose a different gun, I say go 308 unless you reload. 358 is a cool caliber, sure, but good luck finding some if you loose or forget yours... I would suggest 30-06, but if you are concerned with length and your axis is noticeably too long, then another 30-06 will most likely also be too long unless you find something with a 16-18" barrel.

Lol at this thread!!

So, my 1894 25-35 is just a bolt action..... or is only the BLR a bolt action with the L actually representing "lever actuated bolt" lol

Love-er or Lever...

If there is a lever down below, it is a lever. BLR can take a better (unless flinging solid lead is your preference) selection of Cartridges, dats all.

To Quote Paul Simon: "50 ways to love your lever"

Both the BLR and the model 88, on which I believe the BLR was based, are commonly referred to as "lever actuated bolt guns" in the design of their actions.

I wouldn't put much weight into everything you read on chuckhawks.... Plus the "essentially is a bolt action" is simply an opinion.

"The BLR is essentially a "lever operated bolt action" because multiple locking lugs on the head of the bolt rotate into the breech end of the barrel to create a very strong action." - Jon. (apparently Chuck didn't write this one.)

I guess I will say it again... A rotating bolt does not make it a bolt action. Otherwise an AR is a bolt action, and a garand is a bolt action, and a Desert freakin' Eagle is a bolt action.

You are just showing me another example of some old timer who bought into some bullcrap non-nonsensical garbage that someone (probably the people marketing the BLR) said once upon a time, and somehow - contrary to simple logic - still gets repeated.
