Walk into a gun shop. Go do it. Come back here and tell me how many 308's are on the shelf. Whizzums, 270's, 7mag's, 3006's. That's IT. The odd 243, 338F and 375. Drives me bananas!! When did the best hunting cartridge ever designed end up getting blacklisted????

The reason you aren't seeing any .308's on the shelves but lots of other calibres (7mm rem mag, 30-06, .270, .264, etc.) is because the .308s all sold fast and are out shooting.

.308 is still king.

One of the reasons I bought my Ruger Scout rifle - it's in the perfect round, .308 Win.

As well, the .308 rifle can load all KINDS of reduced recoil loads for different situations :

Low & Slow: reduced loads

.308 Winchester
a. 26 inch barrel with a 220 grain NEI .308 cast bullet over 3 grains of Clays is almost silent
b. 24 inch barrel with a 150 grain RCBS bullet, 3 and ½ grains was needed and it was like a loud cap gun.
c. 150gr cast bullet* load 13 grs. of Red Dot in .308 or .30-06 at about 1600 fps
d. 170gr, cast bullet* 13 grs. of Red Dot in .308 or .30-06, about 1500 fps
e. 200gr. cast bullet* 13 grs. of Red Dot in .308 or .30-06, about 1450 fps
f. play with powder levels of Bullseye or Clays for silent loads...but you are not going to get there with 180 grain cast slugs and under.
g. 170 thru 190 grain cast slugs
i. 5 grains of WW231 or HP38 will go around 1000 fps
ii. 8 grains of Unique goes 1250 fps.
iii. 20 grains of 2400 or 18 grains of SR 4759 goes 1800 fps.
iv. * Note: Lubricated Jacketed bullet velocities are about 120-150fps less than a lubricated lead bullet of the same weight.

The Buckshot Option
a. 30-caliber rifles loaded with a single 0-Buckshot, .32-inch diameter, 48 gr., round lead ball.
b. 3.0 grains of Bullseye powder with Dacron of Kapok fiber and then the lead ball.
c. called "the ideal cellar and small-game load," and is suitable for most of the major .30-caliber rifles (including the .30-’06 Springfield, .308 Winchester, .30-30 Winchester, .300 Savage, and .30-40 Krag).

You don't have to tell me! I'm an even bigger fan of the original 308, the 300sav :D I dunno if that's the case cause everyone I know is shooting whizzums or 7mil's the last few yrs.

I have a beautiful old 7mm Rem Mag I bought here off the EE, but it's pretty much for 300+ yards out on the grasslands. For EVERYHTING else its my .308 (well or my 45-70 if I get to go for bear or Muskox someday).

The only upgrade my .308 has gotten is I went from my Savage 99F in .308 to my new Ruger Gunsight Scout in .308. :D

Its the right sized cartridge for whitetail deer in my opinion, and has a real efficiency about its task. With around 45 grains of powder and not much recoil, you get the job done well out to a good distance.

there was a mirror thread on the 06 recently - it's a ploy to sell the new fat magnums- the ones that cost more in powder , bullets and cases

Certainly not! The .308 will be gone when man no longer exist's. And even then they'll be a few Klingon's running around with what we left.

Your looking in the wrong gun shops, as EPPS has quite a few. As noted, you probably don't see any because there sold out.

The 308 is in my book the best balanced round, the power is great, the accuracy is well known and the round is short so the action go accordingly, many goods calibers out there but the 308 is one of a kind... JP.
