It's almost depressing trying to buy an AR15 in Canada

Call Dlask they can build you one.

I'll also be looking for an AR15 (C7) as soon as I finish with my licensing... any leads would be MUCH appreciated. I was a solid shot when I was in the reserves so I'm far from a rookie.

Any C9's out there? lol ;)

What do you mean by Nester?

I'm not sure if your message (Ajayofcanada) was directed to my response or not... but I'll check out a few places. What additional licensing do you need other than restricted before you can legally own an assault rifle?

You don't need anything apart from a restricted license to buy one. But to take it anywhere you need an Authorization To Transport (ATT).

Of course, as people here would be quick to point out, what you're allowed to own cannot be termed as an assault rifle as it would be limited to being a semi-automatic. Not the same as the military version.

My next goal is to make my 16in barrel a 10 inch barrel, I already ordered the tap/die set for threading the front of it to accept flash supprerssors after it's a shortie. Just need to get my buddy to mill it for me on his lathe.

You may want to source and buy a 10" barrel outright to avoid the legal issues. I believe shortening a barrel below 18", regardless of whether it is less than 18" already(ie. 16" to 10"), will make it a prohibited device. Dumb rule but the law none the less...

The CFC has no record of a barrel I just bought, so they have no idea how long it was in the first place, I have a registered lower receiver, and no where on my reg cert does it specify my barrel length, I can shorten my barrel to 7 inches if I want, and even if you reg cert says you have a 16in barrel, you can always buy a shorter barrel and re-register the rifle with the CFC, no different here, except I made the barrel instaed of buying it.

For example, I have a 16in barrel in front of me, ooops I just cut it, the CFC never had a record of the barrels previous length, so who's the say it wasn't 7 inches when I bought it?

Thanks for the tips RevolverRodger and K-2... I'll check out Wolverine.

K-2, I didn't realize the non military version isn't able to be switched to automatic, but I can see why they would limit that. Too bad, but like they taught us in the military... it usually just wastes ammo and destroys your accuracy anyways! Does it let you do a 3 round burst? Or just plain old semi-automatic?

lol, you have much to learn about civilian firearm ownership in our great country. anything other than semiauto = prohib.

I will check my reg. cert. to see if my 16" Ar has the barrel length on the cert. if not, it shouldn't matter, as the AR is restricted by name no?

sogetthis- a 16" ar can be cut down. you cannot take a barrel over 457 mm and chop it down. 16" = 406.4mm

So a 16" barrel is ALREADY under 457mm. To shorten it to 10" will not prohibit the rifle.

These laws are mind-boggling. I know I personally have at least once wondered to myself "Am I breaking some sort of gun law here?"

Especially with storage. I store my guns and ammo in a safe. I have some crates of ammo in the basement. Do they have to be locked up? or kept separately from my guns since they're not in a safe?

As they are now interpreting the law, from what Quester & other dealers indicated in the other thread, it looks like you would be creating a prohibited device by "cutting" the barrel regardless of what the reg cert says. How will the CFC find out? They won't, but that's their interpretation.

Someone correct me if I read that wrong.

I read the other thread as well. I believe they referring to barrels over 457mm. to chop it to under that is a no no. If you're already under that, chop away. I could be wrong, but what they're saying is that altering a barrel to under 457mm is bad. But what happens when the barrel is already under the 457?
