You might want to replace the front sight hood on the 1941 Portuguese. I think the one with the "holes" on it looks perhaps post war Israeli. I had a G33/40 at one time, with one of those on it. Whomever did the clean-up on the rifle, may have installed it at that time.
I think I may have an extra 1941-42 Mauser Werke AG, Oberndorf a/N front sight hood you can have. I'll have a look and if I can find it, I'll send you an email.
The 1942 Enfield is museum quality... wonderful looking old girl.

Looking at the posts there isn't a gun there I haven't had over the past thirty years. Well almost with a few exceptions. I regret selling most of the museum quality guns I once owned but I hope someone is admiring them in their collections. I had a few new in the grease Swedes 38's and 96's, but one gun stands out. I have a friend that wanted a really nice Swede 38, and he wanted the new one with the matching bayonet. He wanted it for a colleague of his. I figured he was a collector like myself, and dug out this gun as a favor to my friend. I got my money and a year or so later I was on a range and this guy was shooting a gun, but I never paid much attention to him or the gun. After we shot our targets he came over to me and showed me this chopped down Swede 38. He said it was shooting high and he had been filing the front sight down. This should tell you something??? Then he asked me if I recognized the gun? I said no, and he proceeded to tell me how he had the barrel cut and other things done to it. He even cut the locking device off the bayonet, and threaded a cap on it to make a survival knife. My friend was with me and I haven't forgot or forgave him for destroying a mint 38. I am really impressed with you gentlemen for preserving this fine collection if guns. You are to be commended. It brings back memories.

Cutting up a piece of history is final....They aint makin more of them.
I guess it s just an indication of just how many were made originally. We all know the stories about $19 enfields/mausers.
One could say that every gun that gets bastardized makes MINE worth more.....

Too late. When I didn't own it, the owner let me fire it's first shots downrange.200 yard gong was easy prey. The previos owner also gave me 97 rds of igman 150 gr sp ammo.I fired 10 rds, he, as it turns out only fired 3 rds.

Joe- hate to bear bad news, but that '42 LB is a 1950's FTR, not an original as-issued piece. A new 1942 would be waltnut stocked with either a Mk2 or Mk3 sight, not a Cmk3 (1944 introduction). Also would have been cuastic blued, not parkerized (post-1950 practice).
Nevertheless, a stunning refurb!
That Portugese is beautiful! Very few stayed so new after they got to Canada back in the 80's! Many are now very nice custom sporting rifles - sadly.
