Just somethin I been working on ~ Yes, I am still alive!!

Where should it go?

shop-001.jpg

No head room!

shop-002.jpg

Lathe maintenance is a continuing project :(

shop-003.jpg

bandsaw is 72" high... I had to jam it between 2 floor joists...

shop-004.jpg

built like a submarine!

Has anyone ever seen a lathe copy attachment like that? it's pretty heavy duty (about 80lb!) - would be nice to be able to put a brand name to it and see if I can find replacement parts to get it working.

Got a very nice double set trigger in the mail for the Jaeger project ... will have to relocate the tang bolt for it, but meh! I have bigger problems than that.

Remington 700 is off to the races now!

700-005.jpg

Going to be free floated & pillar bedded - fitting the pillars here. These are aftermarket ones, easier than making them.

700-004.jpg

Router guide Mk.III (or possibly Mk.IV - I've lost track.) That bench is on it's way out, so I am just screwing it to the bench top for now :)

700-003.jpg

Last minute check on the stock bolts...

700-002.jpg

Rout out the main part of the channel....

700-001.jpg

The rest has to be hand bombed out - gonna be a lot of work :(

Getting REAL close on the 700....

700-009.jpg

All nicely inlet, just have to relieve it for the action bedding

700-001.jpg

I actually found a router bit that is the exact same diameter of the receiver! what a time saver :)

700-006.jpg

final bit to inlet - not real impressed with this plate from Brownells, it need a decent amount of work to clean up... oh well.

700-007.jpg

One last bit to do before the shaping.

700-008.jpg

This little guy for the grip cap...

700-005.jpg

plan was to use a bit of ebony for the insert, but it was a huge amount of aggravation and kept cracking soooooo....

700-004.jpg

I have some nice Eucalyptus burl that should fit the bill nicely.

700-003.jpg

Yup ... easier to work

700-002.jpg

just needs a polish :)

scales.jpg

Also taking some skills building days here and there - been working on scale patterns :)

That's awesome! How do you make scale patterns like that?

lots of practice! :)

I laid out the pattern in Illustrator in 3 sizes, really I want to get them down to about 1/3 of what you see there. but then trace that onto the wood & cut the scales with a gouge that has roughly the same sweep as the scale...
You basically cut straight down with the gouge around all the scales, then start shaving the edges with a knife or chisel.

Yea - took a bit of a break, much needed. But back to work now ! :)

700-012.jpg

The material is pretty soft... just in case there is future warping, I added an aluminum bar to both shore up the fore end and take some of the muscle out of the wood.

700-011.jpg

even if it does warp then this can be easily removed and replaced with a torsion bar :)

700-017.jpg

Prepping for bedding with paste wax, modeling clay and packing tape

700-016.jpg

What a mess!

700-015.jpg

But cleans up real nice.
I think the red clay is a mistake - it's pretty hard to clean up and stains the wood. a different color or something else in future jobs.

Almost there .... next up lining the barrel channel and finishing.

What have I been up to??????

Well it's not a gun but hopefully it's kinda fun for a change :)

IT'S A BARN!!!

That and a little miroku SxS - cam e with no butt stock and was not in ~rough~ condition, but has seen better days.

some before pics

miroku01.jpg

The barrels blued up beautifully :)

miroku02.jpg

Finish is pretty rough, will lose some of the detail on the left side, but hopefully not too much. (probably that entire "500" banner will be gone :(

And some more work on the Jager...
