Kel Tec SU16F review

Anyone try MFS 55Gr JHP ammo in theirs yet? I ordered American Eagle 55gr FMJ, before I saw some terrible reviews on it, in the SU-16. But Frontier sent me MFS instead, I guess I have to at least get the $20 difference back, but am I better off on the ammo anyway?

My rifle loves american eagle 55gr
which is good because I ordered 1000 of them.
My reloads are more accurate (as good as I can do with the TRS-25) but not by much.
Ive got 100% reliability with all ammo(360rds in), 5 different makes of mags, and it`s been 200 rounds since I cleaned it.

I do about an inch and a half at 50yds with it, but all I use is a mini red-dot. On my game with my reloads I`ll hit an inch. All 5 shot groups.

One question I have about the SU canadian is what the chamber dimensions are.
I heard somewhere that it was a Wylde chamber which would make it safe to use 5.56 pressured loads.
Is this true is it a wylde???

I just shot 220 American Eagle 55 Grain FMJ through the Su16F for the first time.

Three failure to eject (FTE)
Six failure to feed (FTF)

Biggest problem clearly was the garbage plastic magazine. One basically came apart like you see below.

Did not have any problems beyond one FTE when I switched to the Lar-15 metal mags. I would consider the plastic ones as emergency backups and something to keep the stock sturdy. They are pretty bad.

Some of the jam problems could also be that I had a friend who had never handled before helping me load the mags. I told him to tap and of course I'm not beyond making a mistake with a new firearm.

Other comments:
-- be very careful when shooting with the bipod. Not only is it just unstead and plastic, but of course it exposes the barrel and chances of searing go way up. I know that sounds obvious but not having any where to put your hand you may instictually go back to touching it. For that reason and the just quality aspect I look forward to replacing it. After brushing it with a bare hand I made sure I put on gloves.
-- actually I have no problems with the foregrip when it isn't a bipod. The knurling feels good in the hand. However, you could really feel the heat build up.
-- Shooting it felt pretty good. The stock and body seemed to hold up to rapid fire. It was quick to reaquire.
-- Where I had cheek weld I didn't like the knurling on the stock rubbing up against my face with the recoil. I don't really understand why there is a knurling there anyway.
-- the stock rubber butt felt comfy
-- trigger did not bother me. It didn't feel squishy like I heard of the Sub2000.

I can't really say anything about the accuracy since I'm so new. I shot it with a Vortex Strikefire and basically blasted away at 25 and then 50 metres. I forgot to adjust the sights for 50 and made some big misses. The iron sights I don't really have an opinion of. I think they are ok. I shot a couple mags on iron and did ok at 50 metres. Taking the Strikefire off the top rail was easy.

i've been trying to reinsert the plastic plate over the springs in my bad magazine and failing spectacularly. I give up.
Just give up on those plastic mag's as they are junk. I also hear ya about the stock irons they to stink. Hence why I slaped a free floating rail with some AR15 irons and also come LAR15 &or PMags on mine. Nothing but smiles know for me. ;)
Who sells SU 16 accessories online?
Any one who sells this rifle. Actually if you want I got the KelTec plastic railed handguard if you want as I no longer need it.

Oh stop teasing man. you know I'm going to upgrade as soon as I'm able.

Would love to look into something beyond the KT foregrip .. even the Red Lion one (I know they don't ship up here because of ITAR) isn't that hot visually.

The Midwest one that they make for the PLR-16 that some people on KTOG have modded to work with the SU16 is interesting.

EDIT:
Kel-Tec said they would mail me a replacement for the plastic mag that was trashed. Good on them. Once I get it, it will go right into its place in the stock where hopefully it never has to be taken out and used

Not sure why midwest would make one only for the plr16 and not one for the su16. Seems dumb.

According to those on KTOG it works except you need to reduce the shim to the barrel.

Of course not freefloated as you want.

Hey all, I've had my SU-16F for a few months now, haven't shot it much but it's been a blast and 100% reliable so far but I have a couple of questions.

1st: For those of you who installed flash hiders and muzzle brakes etc, how did you get the front sight off? I read some people on KTOG were blowtorching the barrel to get off the front sight, and because I'm fairly new to the shooting sports I don't know if that sounds like a bad idea or not. I generally try not to blowtorch my cars if I can avoid it, just figure guns are probably the same. If there is an easier or less risky way, please let me know.

2nd: I have the AR stock kit and like the idea of using it that way at the range, but I also love the compactness when the original stock is folded, and I think the mag storage in the original stock is super cool. I figure that pounding out the double screw tube thing in the bottom of the mag well to change stocks all the time is probably bad for it, has anyone found a good durable solution to this? Preferably something that allows me to quickly and easily change stocks without causing any damage.

what is the total weight of the su16 with the ar stock and for grip? has anyone weighed theirs yet? it would have been nice if the screw on the corner of the mag well where the stock and the front pivots was removable so this thing was a takedown gun instead of a gimped folder with the AR kit. or does it?

Thatz a great idea. A detent quick release pin instead of a double screw. As for the wieght with the AR stock it is 5.8 lbs.

Has anyone actually done a range review? I've seen some american ones that are impressive. but how are they here?

So far I've only seen "Got my Su16 out of the box; looks sweet!" type stuff.

Blowtorch is not necessary, it comes of easy as soon as you loosen 2 set screws on the top of the sight..

Time's tight :( , but I've got to break my SU-16F in sooner rather than later....

I hear ya brother. We finally got out to Colby last Saturday and worked through 5 boxes of MFS. Ran like a dream with only one FTF. Used the LAR and cheapo stock mags.

We were shooting free hand, stock sights and it was plenty accurate. My son schooled me hitting the bullseye at 20m :( He was quick to throw that up on facebook... little bugger.

Irons sights seem good, but I haven't scoped it yet. The rings I want aren't cheap and I have a np29 to pay for.
