So here is the rebuilt, refinished and Engine Block painted/heat cured Winchester model 12:
And here is the Satin Black Caliper VHT Painted Enfield No5 Mk1:
They may not be a million dollar show room finish, but I tell you this, that is one durable, long lasting, tough as nails armour jacket lol
Stripping them down to bare steel was knuckle breaking work, all the sanding, degreasing, heating, degreasing again and then the proper application of the spray can method and then oven curing etc A lot of work but I am amazed at the toughness of the finish and to be honest I think they look great!
Both guns have been out to the range extensively and the finish is still 100% rock solid even after exposure to solvents, oils etc during cleaning.
Spray paint is utterly useless. You may as well wrap it in coloured craft paper. It's going to chip instantly, flake off, rub off and then it just looks like a technicolour abortion. Especially once the gun heats up. None of that stuff is rated to withstand any kind of heat whatsoever.
One drop of solvent/oil and it's melted right off too turning your rifle into a sticky, cruddy s**t show.
The caliper paint (VHT brand heat cured) is much tougher than the block paint and way easier to use. It has a much higher initial tack when you start your primary coats. Doesn't look as nice as the Engine Block but it is much tougher. I cannot scrape it off even with a utility knife.
