Well done the pair of you! Like to share those experiences, weather, time of day, rifle and loading? I really am nosy!!

Well done the pair of you! Like to share those experiences, weather, time of day, rifle and loading? I really am nosy!!

We started our hunt on Nov.11 just scouting the area and within the first 10 minutes we saw 7 does (maybe a button buck or 2) just over a hill we walked and became very optimistic for the hunt. Throughout the day we saw a few more groups of does and a few spikers. It was pretty much went like this until Wednesday. On Thursday we hadn't seen anything and sat the whole day. It wasn't until the evening after shooting hours that we saw a nice big buck (looked like a 5x5) with 3 does just off the road say 50 yards.

Friday morning we set up in the SW corner of a field with a good 400-500 yard max to the tree lines (think it was around 13 degrees out). At 9:30 we spotted 1 doe walking towards the edge of the North treeline and as she passed through a set of trees another came out walking with her. The spooked after a minute and ran into the trees. So my buddy decides to drive over and try to perhaps push them back towards me around the other side. After a few minutes I heard a shot in his direction sounding quite close.

I got the txt "I GOT MY FIRST BUCK!" (shot at 30 yards Rem 700 VTR .308 w/ Hornady 168gr SST), I couldn't have been happier and was glad to have been a part of a friends first successful deer hunt. So I started walking over to him. When we lifted his head he had a wound on his neck (Anyone know what might have done this?) (When I skinned and dressed him out the wound hardly went past the hide and had done very little to the meat strangely):

We went back out and set up in the evening after hiking for a good while West and then a good while south in a very hilly area. We laid prone up on a nice hill with all shots within 300 yards with about 2 hours to sundown. As I was scanning around my buck appeared to the right at a set of trees, so I let my buddy know and he got him in his scope too. He walked to the left sniffing the ground and I took the shot after he passed from behind a small set of trees on the hill he was walking on (211 yards Savage 10pc .308 - Hornady 165gr SST, 44.00gr Varget, Lapua Brass, BR2 Primer). He jumped up and ran to the left from where we were and then walked into a treed area.

We waited for a bit and then went to where I had shot him to find foamy blood. We sat down for a half hour as it was starting to get closer to dark. We couldn't find a blood trail as we walked to where he ran so we decided to just go where he went into the bush and found him only a little ways in. I showed my buddy again how to dress a buck in the dark this time with a flashlight, at least it wasn't cold out. I got warm enough dragging to take my jacket off all together just wearing a t-shirt for a while. With my phone about to die I figured out where we were on google earth and it was a horrible 2 hour ordeal in the dark with no more than an LED light to get back to the vehicle (Next time I will bring my pack that has my drag harness, saw, dressing knife, and flashlight on the last outing too not just all the other ones haha). I'm having my first cape mount (upright slight right turn) done with this one and can't wait to get it back.

I can easily say this was my favorite deer hunt yet and look forward to trying out a new area next year as well as getting into other areas of hunting and trapping. Huge thanks to Pres 27 for leading me to this area.

I got this back from my taxidermist a few months ago , just finished moving and finally found it's home. It's the first thing folks will see when they walk in the front door ;)

That's very nice Thomas. I'll bet that made up for a lot times you were staring at the ceiling and wondering about walking again.

Here's a nice heavy 6x6 from a couple years ago - I wasn't able to get out there last year due to a case of terminal cancer in the family. Green scored 332 even, net 320 6/8, just made the BC Book. For scale, I'm 6'2"/260 lbs. The 270 gr TSX broke both shoulders at 217 yards and was recovered just under the hide on the off-side. Cleaned it off and weighed it when I got home - 269.3 grains, and a perfect four-petal mushroom as shown below.
